    Cerakote and Rust

Hi all, apologies if this has been covered, I could not find any recent threads.

I have a new ish rifle that has cerakote ( sauer 100 ) and seem to be getting rust coming through on the barrel. It's only been out on a handful of hunts and has been wiped down etc after.

I could understand it rusting if the cerakote has been damaged, but it looks new still!

Have any of you running cerakote had this happen? Any thoughts on how to remove it?

I will try add a photo when I can.

    Cheers!

    thats the problem with coatings...

    They trap moisture/residues etc.

I thought the sauers were stainless underneath?

That’s poor application surface wasn’t prepared properly they can’t trap moisture in if theirs no where for the moisture to get threw mine is flawless it’s done 10 days on Stewart island recently and just before that 7 torrential days in the bush a lot of the factory cerokote across all brands is average to poor

I used to work in protective coatings, blasted cleaned surfaces begin the degrade immediately usually there's a half to one hour window between blasting and paint application, obviously the shorter the better. After about 3 hours it's back to the start for critical applications or it won't last.
I know of a few Sauers that have done that. I'm not certain but I don't think the factory uses ceracote rather one of the other low bake"ceramic coatings"

Like taking a car back to bare metal and not painting it for a week prep is key

    Thanks for the responses.

Yes I believe the coating is a similar cramic coating to cerakote. And I get that the finish won't be fantastic on a fairly cheap factory rifle. Just expected a bit more life out of it. Only 18 months old.

Don't really want to spend the coin on re coating it for now. Probably just stick with stainless next time. Rust can be managed with regular maintenance at least.

    Cheers.

Got my old blued tikka cerakoted. No rust so far and it has been drenched numerous times during downpours. It was sandblasted and cerakoted well the first time down in Invercargill through Delta Mike.

The sauer 100 “silver” are renown for having had issues with the coating paint they had been treated with. At least the first or second batches . I don t know if the problem has been sorted since . One simple test, is you stick a bit of electrical tape on the barrel. Then peel it off. If the paint stick to the tape, you have a problem. Other properly prepared cerakoat barreled actions don’t have that issue.

My Sauer 100 with cerakote has been out a lot in the wet over the past 18 months. Fallen quite a few times on trees and rocks and I've grazed the coating off in places. No rust evident. Might be a bad batch.

Identify your target beyond all doubt because you never miss (right?) and I'll be missed.
