Maybe I'm gun snob, but I didn't like the Ruger Ranch. Went in to a store to buy one, as soon as I got hold of it, I thought no. Bolt was far from smooth and the LOP was short. Generally didn't feel nice to hold. Not saying don't buy one, just try before you buy.

Wouldn't rule out the American but wasn't impressed with the in-store feel.

Would have to play with it to know. Having had Howas in the past, definitely would go that route.

CZ do a 300BLK bolt. Available in NZ now.

@Hiawatha... why is this? What is the explanation? Velocity, bullet or shot placement?

I’m curious because the .300 BLK loaded with 110gr hollow points at ~2,300 ft/sec dropped red deer at short range like they’d been hit by lightning.

There is nothing snobby about it mate. Some of the Rugers are just rough as.

I’ve been using a 77/44 and it is the most agricultural rifle I’ve ever had. The action and trigger are next level rough/heavy. Even after a mega clean, lubrication, polish and all the good stuff it’s still crap. But the environment and manner in which it’s used (bailed pigs) means none of this really matters... it certainly shoots straight.

can't speak for the ranch - I have a predator which is a great rifle (same family but i believe it is a step up), except the stock is flimsy, works for what i'm using it for though - may replace it with the MDT XRS maybe... shoots incredibly well, don't remember the bolt ever being rough but I do know it is alot smoother now after some use, lots of working the bolt and regular cleaning and oiling after outings.
