Changing rear sight on SMLE III - rivet

Just dotting my "is and crossing my "t"s on this...

Per photo, the pin connecting the rear sight elevator bar is riveted. One assumes correct procedure is to carefully file the edge spread off the rivet to enable removal but leaving enough length to re-rivet the replacement on. Yes?

    Tips 'n tricks?

Mmm so on a closer inspection what I thought was a groove is actually a cross pin. So need to knock the cross pin out, then file rivet flush....?

Ah well shit that was easy, pay no attention folk, just talking to myself here. The cross pin tapped out sweet, the "rivet" turned out to just be a pin with some end wear it drifted out easy. Just had to catch the sight as it flew off its spring loaded base.

    Thks for the help, lol

Beat me to it. Google a cutaway drawing it will help you no end with stripping down and reassembly as some bits only go back one way...

Yes it went back together against the spring tension with a bit of careful handling.

Slow day at the office today, got the dreaded lurgy so pausing every five min or so to have a hack doesn't help the focus lol

I disassemble spring loaded stuff in a large clear plastic bag - it keeps parts from taking an unplanned voyage across the workshop.

Yes there's a muzzleloader front sight blade I'm hoping to find some year soon in my workshop
    Can't have gone far
But suspect it hitched a ride with something I shift while looking for it

But learned a lot making a new one from scratch
