Some .30-06 chambers need to go a long way forwards to clear the old .308 shoulder fully out and not end up with a ring showing on the cases. No real advantage though if you aren't restricted for mag length as most heavier .308 pills still project down into the .308 case even though it's a long action, so you don't gain the volume you think you would and with handloading with the pill seated out you can often gain a useful amount over the short action mag lengths which really narrows the gap to the .30-06.
