Thread: Cheap and fun guns.

Floating the idea of something cheap and cheerful. Apart from an sks or something like a mossberg maverick I haven't come up with a whole lot. Would probably only spend 500 bucks or so on it. Ideally with cheap ammo like 7.62 x 39 or 223.

Suggestions?

Norinco ,bisley 7.62x39 is hard to beat I got a bisley a while back good fun , cheap ammo can knock over a deer if you want , could find a 2nd hand M14 or maybe a 22mag or a 357mag they are cheap to reload can get a single shot for 3 or 400 but being a single shot mite be lacking in the fun factor

bought one of these off another member just the other day ..... it's away getting shortened and threaded as we speak

Good idea A mate of myn pointed that out to me as well never thought of doing that, could make it a really handy bush gun plus having a suppressor would make it more shootable especially for plinking & the like

I bought a cheap second hand Zastava 223 for under $500 scoped. Great fun and accurate. Highly recommend finding something like this, cheap to buy, cheap to feed, so you use it more and get more practice. Rabbits, hares, magpies, wallabies hate it though.

running costs are king for a fun gun, .22 is king of the powder burners in this regard. a Gervarm .22 lr with a red dot and a can is hard to beat for fub and low mantance

or wait untill gun city has sks's on sale like they do a few times a year, while you wait buy a crate of x39 ammo from Aouraki Ammo while they still have surpluss left

Apart from the ammo cost issue with some, you can find some real bargains by keeping an open-minded eye on trademe.

Zastava M85's are under-rated, I remember when they came with open sights and a single set trigger for no extra cost, ran about $800 from memory, they even did a fully wooded Bavarian-style one. A mate of mine bought one, the stocks are a bit hit and miss, some have a nice grain to them, others look plain as pine, I guess they don't waste any wood when they make the stock. With hand-loads his .223 would do sub-moa.

Fun gun and no reloading get a 223 ar15 or cheaper get a sks

Semi auto fun is great fun, plenty of fast back up shots and a couple of spare magazines all the more fun but it's not cheap. Had a ball when I owned a mini14 and a mini30 and lost count on how many $ boxs of ammo I'd gone through enough to buy another gun or two easy. Can still have a lot of fun with a Ruger 10/22.

I've got one of these Norinco Bisley 7.62x39, and the accuracy is shocking. I've tried a few brands of cheapo ammo, and the best grouping that Ive managed is around 7moa. Ive taken the stock off to see if there are any visible problems, flaoted the barrel, nothing changed grouping. What results are you getting with yours, and with which ammo?

I really like the way it looks and feels though.

@Yukon iv just been using Barnaul both sp & hollow shoot pretty good , think the 2 top shots where after scope adjustment at 80 meters

How about a pump action 12g? With slugs, buckshot or bird shot you can drop anything in NZ. Cheap as chips to run and operate.

My suggestion: if you already have a good rifle in 243, 7mm08, 6.5 or 308, use that money towards buying more ammo for your existing accurate rifle (s). It will give your more fun and much less hassle.

Or you could go out buy a 500-dollar 7.62 x 39, then another 300 on an OK scope, another 100 on bits and pieces like rings, sling, bipod, and safe space, and finally another 100 on range trips to tune it in with the right ammo. That is about 1000 dollars to get ready to shoot (that is if you are lucky that this cheap gun shoots well without having to go to a gun smith). Even if you are active you will probably shoot less than 100 shots a year, you save about 1 dollar per shot compared to you existing good rifle. That is only 100 dollars saving a year, and you are shooting a lesser gun for the next 10 years.

Compared to just buy more ammo for your current rifle, your 1000 setup cost can be spread over the next 10 years. $100 a year, exactly what you had saved from shooting the lesser gun.
