Always preferred the Marlin 336's over the winchester 92 and 94 for the simple reason that the 336 is wayyyy easier to clean. Hunted with a 94 for 3 years then got tired of having to clean the moisture out of it and the fiddly little parts. Somehow I always end up in the rain though, so might be a different experience for others :P
Seeing as it's a backpack gun, go with something like a baikal or handi rifle, cut it down 10cm over minimum length to keep some sight radius or need to recrown, slap some iron sights on it and call it done. No need to worry about whether the scope got a bump in the pack, no bulk to contend with, easy and simple. 30-30 is a great cartridge for under 100m - not bulky, minimal recoil and sound, suitable for deer etc with a 150-170gr projectile and works well in a short barrel. I love fancy guns, but there's a lot to be said for a work-horse of a gun that will take unlimited abuse and you don't worry about scrabbling across rocks with.
Im sure Hayes and Associates could get you one of these

The 94 trappers are pretty compact, but getting hard to find.
Forgot to suggest, if you're wanting a 92 action, import a Rossi Ranch Hand with a regular 92 stock - about the smallest you can go without getting into take downs. They're 23 inches as manufactured, so need the full stock to not be a pistol in NZ. Quality is alright, nothing terrible but definitely a rossi product.
Check out these.... carbon stock, titanium action & steel barrel. Not a peasant gun I imagine they would cost a bit.
FANZOJ KB-1 TI CARBON
Currently I just do overnighters with good success, but one day when I've got more time on my hands I would like to go 'exploring' on longer missions and carry something light. A takedown bow could be fun but too but with my current bow ability i'd go hungry.
Most of what Fanzoj makes is in the $50k+ range. They don't list prices on their website - "if you've gotta ask..." as the saying goes.
So yeah.
Baikal > Fanzoj.
If no one is prepared to part with the one he made especially for them as a custom build, I would guess the only person who could supply one would be Scott ...I guess these will be either hard to get or Scott will be very busy earning Jacinda bucks.....(that is from people spending their buy back money, not jacinda paying him not to....)
I have enquired with somone I know to see if he has a more recent contact, but he has a Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/ssrnz/) though I see he has not posted on it in nearly a year....
And they were pretty pricey

These look like the nuts
Classy, lightweight and cheap compared to the Prinz and Fanzoj
Blaser K95 is still the best option as it ticks both boxes being classy and lightweight .
Take down on seconds
Scope returns to zero 100%
perfectly
As strong as a bolt action
Available in some interesting euro calbers

Is your one a straight stock? Is it a factory recoil pad?

Left handed cheek piece @MSL
Classy, lightweight and special
If you were half as handsome as me you’d be a much better person

Hi Akaro1, what caliber is your blaser into? Nice animal buy the way
@MSL
Absolutely correct.
The best single shot chamois caliber
6.5x65R RWS
Second only to the 7x65R Brenneke.
I do like those Scott Traill tube rifles...can't message him on FB but have tried an email I found.
@tanqueray
Sorry no !
I sold all my Winchester lever actions as a lot to a guy up North
And decided to sink the funds into some serious vintage single shots
Another single shot option. I shot a 45/70classy wood for the $ and better trigger than my Baikel. One in 308 or 243?

They look good. Gun city have them for 900. Also they are clearing out their TCs. I thought these would make good mountain rifles with 26 or 28inch barrels. They have 243, 270, 308 and 300wm among others
Thanks man... I like the idea of one in a 45-70 shooting cast lead and blackpowder…. a Marlin Guide Gun in that cal or .444 would be nice too
I've posted this before on the forum but it's changed slightly since then, still a work in progress. My Thompson Contender G1, a classy little takedown single shot in 30-30 I think. Barrel fluted, just fractionally over legal length, mil-spec coated. Swapped the front grip for some carbon fiber tube, I'm working on a carbon tube stock (just a mock up with blue tac currently). I've got a permit for a pistol grip, hopefully that plan will come together. As pictured it's bang on 2.1kg, I think it will break the sub 2kg mark... Who knows, thread an Oceania Defense suppressor on it? Taken plenty of animals with it. Recoil is fine.

Ok @joelhenton
I will put it in my long list of problems to solve.
I have 416 ss for barrel lugs and extractors and some roughed out
I have ss spring steel for the extractor flat spring
I have tracked down ss roll pins
If the weld test results arw possative i will push on with a run of 4 or 5
The other nice thing with the G2 is it sits nicely in the front passengers side of the truck while i was working on a west coast farm recently. Always there and easier to get out.
Saw heaps of the wrong breed and sex of deer but did get some pigs and a goat.
Down side is its to short for the overhead carrier in my kubota side by side
