Cleaning a Filthy shotgun barrel??

Brought a new old double hammer gun in the weekend
Its a very nice gun locks up nice and tight
I only problem is there’s are fair amount of pitting in the barrels it’s not the worst ive seen but certainly not the best
Still plenty shootable though over all excellent condition for a 120yo gun
Anyway i am cleaning the barrels and after a good 10 cycles of hopes no9 brushing letting it soak patching out and repeting the patches are still coming out like this

Probably just 120 years of shit lol the good thing is as I clean im noticeing the barrels are in better condition than 1st Thorght

Any tips for getting it spotless?

Heard of old sewer pipes being cleaned up by plugging the barrel. Then putting muriatic acid from Bunnings into the barrel for 5 minute's then scrubbing with baking soda.

Or do the same with a good solvent and leave it for ages. Then attach a drill to the cleaning rod with a brass brush.

Spray with solvent hoppes no9, wd40 our what ever then let soak. 15 minutes. Over night better.
Next get your drill gun and your cleaning rod with bronze brush. On LOW speed run it through the barrel. This should help clear most of the crud. Your bronze brush won't like it much but your barrels will. Pays to hold them in a vice our suchlike. Oh and make sure you remove the stock and forend as you don't want all that oil getting into the wood.

Brush on cleaning rod, some solvent and a battery drill.
Works a treat.

Just a thought so long as the crud doesn't conscrict the bore 1or 2 light loads will shift a lot and loosen the rest up. So a stiff bronze brush parker hale type or steel turks head will shift the rest.

Yeah it’s clean enough to shoot for sure so I could do that @Marty Henry would probably work well would have to be black powder or possibly a super light smokeless load like falcon cas ammo
But the gun isn’t nitro proof so I’ll probably just use black to be safe
@Russian 22. Ive herd of that aswell im sure on a barrel made if single steel would probably work well
Damascus steel is 2 types of steel forge welded together and it’s actually Designed to be Acid Itched (hence pattens on the steel)
One steel is affected by the Acid more than the other Making the Pattern you see in Damascus or twist steel barrels
So not keen on using acid for that reason

The battery drill idea could work well

The gunsmith dude at the gun club highly recommends Collings no 90. The hoppes no9 stuff he said just isn't what it was anymore
Also slip 2000 choke tube cleaner. Even recommended on the website for bores. it just keeps cleaning. you can get a clean patch, leave the barrel for a week and get more out.

Hey @rambo-6mmrem when you close the gun which way down the barrels is that engraving?
If your right handed do you have to turn it to your left to read?
If so then I'd hazard a guess that's a shotgun made for a left handed shooter:thumbsup:
Apple cider for the outside of those barrels will bring them up with a lovely orange glow.

Bronze brush in the drill is the go, put the drill in the vice and turn it on slow, so then you have full control of your barrel in your hands. Brakekleen works wonders, spare it down the bore, leave a few minutes and then blow it out with compressed air.

turks head works a treat.... it MIGHT be black powder was last used through it so once it is clean it could be great from then on...I used to own a shottie with pitted bore than would gather wad plastic down it..the turks head fixed it.... crc sprayed down bore and left to soak shifts most things ,Ive brought back some fairly average rifles that way over the years.

Hoppes No9 smells nice. I wear it as aftershave.

How about brasso on a patch

mightyboosh it removes tar from alloy mag wheels ....its good stuff kero is similar.

Bronze brush on a drill
A couple of minutes on each barrel with plenty of wd40
Brought them up pretty nice
Just pitted remaining but nowhere near as bad as I thought when I brought the gun

I can believe that. I bought a "demo" shotgun which was meant to be in A1 condition. Externally it was perfect, but the barrel looked like a rusty barrel write-off. I got some Hoppes solvent and then some fancy foaming stuff. No amount of cleaning sorted it. A few good soakings in WD40 and the crap just fell off.

WD40 is slippery stuff.
your experience with Hoppes is what my gsmith mate said. Not like it used to be at all.

Well it went bang (in the good way) put about 30 black powder loads down it with no issues

Id be bloody tempted to take barrels off plug one end and fill both with boiling water(ALA ye old.303 treatment)-a variation on that im told was a bit of vinegar in the H2O-strips paint off brushes so dont see why not?? leave upright in corner for 10-15 drain run a couple of patches through and see what slithers into the day light .repeat until you at least get a reasonable eyeball on the steel surface -then go for your standard treatments.
actually try a wee spot of oven cleaner-cleans the oven so why not?
