    Close quarters rifle.. 45-70?

I have the urge for a close quarters rifle again.... who is using a 45-70?

Thinking about getting a factory rifle in one....Marlin Express?

H&R single shot might be on the cards for a short term play with the cal but if I can work it the Marlin is prefered

Or I may build a custom bolt in 338 SAUM with open sights and a detachable scope

But the Custom would have to wait and I am not that Patient :

Good option, especially in a Marlin Express. Will definately put the deer down!

I have a 45-70, but its a H&R Springfield Trapdoor rifle, and only comes out when we feel like making big holes in things at the farm.

I had a loan gun given to me to use one weekend, certainly poleaxed them, but the wound was actually very small. A good meat gun if you ask me, didn't damage that much - shoulder shots with a .243 are twice as messy

45-70 is my first choice but the others are on the Radar as the contact I have is out of stock on the 45-70

I have asked about the other two but no reply yet.

Not enough grunt for what I want.. Still might build the 338 SAUM as I think I have some open sights sorted. Have another option to look at that a mates got....and that may be long term loan for free

There are a few 9.3x62's starting to float around, I sort of came by one because I collect Mauser sporters.

Mine is a Model B, 7 1/4 lbs. It is just behind a 375 H&H in power, but has a surprisingly mild recoil, I can comfortably shoot the 300 Gn solids (that came with the rifle) and I'm usually a recoil wuss.

The big plus is that with 232 or 250 gn projectiles (surely enough to flatten ANYTHING you'll ever come accross in Australasia - including Buffalo) it shoots quite flat, the Scandies use it for long range moose etc.

I have a Marlin 1895G in 45-70 Govt at my place, unfortunately it is not mine, the most remakable thing about it, bearing in mind I haven't fired it yet, is the massive hole in the barrel.

For bush work I use a .375 Big Bore 94 Winchester with an aim point scope and it is all the gun I need. Works well in heavy scrub and out to 150 metres.

The latest hunting and fishing catalogue has the new remingtons in .300 Blackout Calibre with a 16.25 inch bull barrel threaded for a suppressor, ream it out and enjoy the short 30.

Then if its what you want screw a 338 tube on it with a saum chamber.

For $1399 its a hell cheap project

They also show a 6.5 pound "Superlight" with a Bell & Carlson aramid fibre stock $1899, cheap as project.

AND new Model 7 rifles, ( lighter receiver than a Titanium ), $1199, again hell cheap.

    Wooohooo more projects.....
