I'm looking at a new s/h bolt action rifle and viewed a couple today both the same cal. And Suppressed ,ones a ruger American the other a tikka m590 both the same price. Obviously the tikka is older but very clean with well defined rifling what are your thoughts on the better of the two and why?
Tikka 590 any day. Well made, slick bolt. Better than the T3.

Older Tikkas are class, away infront of anything mass produced
If both are the same cost the Tikka probably equates to better value. But your intended use is possibly also a factor. Rough and tumble use, infrequent cleaning or maintenance, banged about in the truck or on a bike means the Ruger might be the better bet. Not as slick as the Tikka but usually shoot pretty well. If you appreciate something more refined made of better materials to a higher standard and you make a point of looking after your rifles, then the Tikka.
Also, if you shoot a lot I would expect better barrel life from the Tikka.
Bet that Tikka was heavier too. Those 590s are nice and shoot well but are built heavy
The Tikka! made when quality was appreciated, and accurate, a forever rifle. The Ruger would work, but I would almost put money on it that you will trade up within the next 3 years.
Does anyone think it's kind of odd that a Tikka is the same price as a Ruger American?
no not odd - those early tikkas just not appreciated enough - many hunters think they are heavy and a fuddy duddy from a bygone era- ignoring the fact they are a very well made extremely accurate rifle with a very smooth action - so many new young hunters just want plastic wannabes -

The old Tikka will be too heavy. I would probably wait for something better than either.
if ya a big bugger ya wont worry about the weight of the Tikka I carried a ,270 Tikka 690 for many years replaced with a Sako 85 - but another that do come up might and may suit is the A7 line of sakos budget Sako but they shoot - more expensive the Sako 75 very nice
stumbled over the tikka in a dark corner of a shop where most wouldnt even notice ......wood/blued ,the ruger i cold probably get cheaper if i push a little.....really more interested in any reliability issues......having said that im also tempted by a new cz 557 which is a little bit more coinQuote:

Theirs a stainless synthetic 708 590 or 595 what ever it is at wilsons for $999 only thing that stopped me buying it was it only came with a big mag that stuck below the stock
Tikka 590, 595 and 695 are excellent firearms. Owned a 308 in 595. Superb rifle. Slightly heavier alot of gun for your money and more often than not, deadly accurate.
The older Tikka would be my pick.
On a side note, anyone got a wood stock for 695 gathering dust?
The Tikka will probably appreciate in value (if you look after it). Even though the Ruger is a good rifle, I don't think that would.
Could be coincidence, or deliberate. If the Tikka has been on the rack for a while maybe the asking price was reduced to make sale more likely.Quote:

well i missed out on the tikka....... i spotted on the saturday , had the cash on the sunday arvo (too late to make the trip down ) rang to check it was still there this weekend just gone ...... "sorry sold on tuesday" some other hawkeyed customer spotted it and snaffled it .
so i have bought a ruger the first 308 in 44 years of firearms ownership..... i have a question does anyone else do direct to action rings other than talleys , i know where i can get some i just like to check my options
DNZ Game Reaper or Leupold will probably do a direct mount, but for what it's worth I'd go picatinny rail as it helps sort a lot of issues like some scopes not having much room to adjust eye relief if you put them in direct mount rings.Quote:

Considering a Teslong borescope that connects to your phone can be had for like £50 new, I'd get one and use it. Video and pictures can be recorded and sent off via your phone if you don't know what to look for.
Those wearing rose tinted glasses will always pipe up when they hear about old rifles, but truth is a rooted barrel that has not seen a cleaning rod in the last 20 years will never shoot as well as a brand new one that has been done to a decent standard.
The M595/M690/M695 all had a very weird bedding system, if you want to call it that. Basically a flat bottom receiver with a circular recoil lug. Mousetrap if I ever saw one! Only been 'bested' by Sako's later effort on the 85 involving a cantilevered recoil lug relying on wood screws... :wtfsmilie:
Ruger sells plenty of rifles, took over some of Remington's market share in the US after it went bust on multiple occasions.

So for the naysayers it may not be as Purdy as a wood blued tikka but ......
