Thread: Comparison thoughts

I'm looking at a new s/h bolt action rifle and viewed a couple today both the same cal. And Suppressed ,ones a ruger American the other a tikka m590 both the same price. Obviously the tikka is older but very clean with well defined rifling what are your thoughts on the better of the two and why?

Tikka 590 any day. Well made, slick bolt. Better than the T3.

Older Tikkas are class, away infront of anything mass produced

If both are the same cost the Tikka probably equates to better value. But your intended use is possibly also a factor. Rough and tumble use, infrequent cleaning or maintenance, banged about in the truck or on a bike means the Ruger might be the better bet. Not as slick as the Tikka but usually shoot pretty well. If you appreciate something more refined made of better materials to a higher standard and you make a point of looking after your rifles, then the Tikka.
Also, if you shoot a lot I would expect better barrel life from the Tikka.

Bet that Tikka was heavier too. Those 590s are nice and shoot well but are built heavy

The Tikka! made when quality was appreciated, and accurate, a forever rifle. The Ruger would work, but I would almost put money on it that you will trade up within the next 3 years.

no not odd - those early tikkas just not appreciated enough - many hunters think they are heavy and a fuddy duddy from a bygone era- ignoring the fact they are a very well made extremely accurate rifle with a very smooth action - so many new young hunters just want plastic wannabes -

stumbled over the tikka in a dark corner of a shop where most wouldnt even notice ......wood/blued ,the ruger i cold probably get cheaper if i push a little.....really more interested in any reliability issues......having said that im also tempted by a new cz 557 which is a little bit more coin

Could be coincidence, or deliberate. If the Tikka has been on the rack for a while maybe the asking price was reduced to make sale more likely.

gladdens me old hunters heart all the praise for the tikka 595 and 695 yes classic firearms and even better some have very good wood if you do panic about weight then a composite stock will be available I have had two a 595 in ,222 got two 7 shot mags for it really good goat culling set up and won the Forest service shield at the DOC shoot with it - and had a 695 in .270 wish I had never sold it but the Sako 85 that replaced it was a very nice rifle

The old Tikka will be too heavy. I would probably wait for something better than either.

if ya a big bugger ya wont worry about the weight of the Tikka I carried a ,270 Tikka 690 for many years replaced with a Sako 85 - but another that do come up might and may suit is the A7 line of sakos budget Sako but they shoot - more expensive the Sako 75 very nice
