    OK so it's a heavy barreled 17HMR.

So you will be much more effective with a higher powered scope. Fixed 4x are special interest items now as modest zoom scopes are the same price and just as reliable now.

Something in the 3-9× or 4-12× range would realise the potential. Brands like redfield, Leupold and bushnell and weaver will give 80% of the functionality of a nightforce for this application.

Another scope worth looking at would be one that I use on my 22LR, the Hawke vantage 3-12×44 . These are highly though of in the airgun world and enable close focus to 10m plus further out you can correct parallax; they aren't for dialing but with the 17HMR you will be able to hold over pretty reliably and this scope has a half mil hash reticle. They are available from youngs air guns in auckland for $369 and hunting and outdoor supplies in carterton for $368 which are both excellent shops to deal with online. Good brand name mounts are also cost effective and I would look at leupold or sports match but others may have recommendations.
