    you could go the horse bandage route....... or insulation tape,its not as agricultural as might first think if you do it carefully...my S/S Howa has a large section of the barrel covered by single piece of insulation tape as was going to take it down to stewart island...I didnt go as cinders put us in home D and I havent got around to removing it yet...Ive had different tapes stay on barrels for over 10 years,remove them and the blueing is still pristine.
    there is special cloth tape specifically for the job,most is camo so may look a bit daft on range rifle...the adhesive tape physiotherapists use is a plain tan,might be better suited,perhaps??
