    Crowns and BC

    2 well discussed topics!

This article is some serious food for thought (read the whole thing) The crown stuff seriously challenges "what we know" and the BC bit is looking at the subject in a way I have not considered before at all. The Over-Rated Crown

Reminds me of NK's 6mm br Blaser which had a blatantly shit crown with a huge corona of soot all in the vertical and apparently still shot like a laser beam. Also reminds me of some sad cunt moaning and crying like a bitch about having to recrown his .270 with a leatherman while out thar hunting - still seemed to shoot alright!!

I have seen several rifles with oil ring bulges right at the muzzle and seemingly perfect crowns shoot very accuratly , and others turn into spray guns , same with giant pits in the bore , some shoot well some dont , with that in mind I'd like to see that very interesting experiment repeted with different calibers and different projectile types and weights and velocities and even barrel weight before any conclusions are finally drawn ,
Get as close as you can then six feet closer

The WORST bore I have ever seen .. 6" of heavy pitting back about 4" from the muzzle shot sub 0.1" groups at 115yds

Bloody interesting article. I knew BC varied with velocity but didnt realise by how much. I think if you have a rifle shooting under an inch consistently with low ES under 20fps, I think it would be better to never think of that article again
I have in the past known a few recrowned barrels, where accuracy markedly improved after doing so.

I'm happy if I can consistantly shoot minute of deer after huffing and puffing and hauling my fat arse up the hills ..... the queste for sub 1" MOA accuracy for hunting rifles is unnecessary, leave that to the paper punchers.

I know every rifle I own can shoot extreamly accurately off the bench, But it's a bloody awkward heavy noisy thing to carry through the bush and the deer tend to fu*k off while I'm pissing around setting it up for the shot.

That said I do like to look after my crowns.

    Cheers

Not sure - they are using pretty good gear by the sounds of things, probably pretty accurate.

It goes a long way to explaining why results at the range dont match "those damn ballistic calculators", i.e one ballistics program works for one guy but not another = its how closely that program's algorithm or fudge factor fits your "claimed projectile BC / chamber / bore / charge system". We should all probably be altering our stated BC's for each pill with measured information from the range to correct them for this deformation / yaw effect (or just shooting shit...). It certainly explains for me why exbal works good for my sprout / not so good for my abolt, I was blaming my scope clicks UNTILL i swapped scopes over and had the same shit happening...

Yes BC is not constant but I certainly throught that the BC of a pill leaving the barrel of a rifle should be "a given number". He is getting at the fact that 2 identical pills fired from 2 rifles side by side will have different apparent BC's due to their degree of yaw induced by barrel / chamber variations. I.e one is going straight and one is leaving the barrel slightly sideways or the pill has been extruded into a slightly oblique and less slippery shape.
