I never import firearms but I have imported a few machineries from around the globe
Customs can randomly appoint a broker or customs agent for you if you ask for it when they call you,
or you could use your own broker or google one.

Customs will send you a letter with a case number
and your agent or broker will need that case number and they will handle it for you
From memory, my broker fee was $500+gst each time.

Did your fees include GST as well ? If GST is payabale Customs includes this in their charges.

My broker fee was separate from custom charges (bio sec, fumigation, xray, etc..etc.)
then + GST for all of them at the end.

There was 1 time, I was late pay by 1 day and I thought it was Sunday so what's the rush,
and I got fined for $600. Ggggrrrr.......
