Black hot gives a better view of the surroundings as various shades of grey allowing you to identify visible features to look for with the naked eye or scope.
At night that setting gives you basically a black and white picture of the landscape like it was taken during the day making navigation easy.

Interesting, horses for courses I guess. When hunting Fallow I find that black hot is better in more open country, the signal really stands out. I also find black hot seems to give better resolution so when I am in paddocks I can identify fence lines and other natural features better. In cutover where i do a lot of hunting I find that cut stumps seem to give more false signal on black hot vs red hot which is my preference in this type of country. there seems to be less false signals and the stronger ones will get some red fill in the centre. Might be different in heavier bush but to be fair I have not really tried it in this situation.
