Question Deer Rifle 270 or 25-06

I am a relativity new hunter, mainly hunting in open country looking for deer and goats up to 250m (max). I am looking at buying a rifle. I have really only used 270's for this hunting in the past but looking at a 25-06 just as it is a little lighter. wanting some feed back as to weather im heading down the right track, feel free to suggest our calibers please. I just want something smaller then a 270 that will still reliable bring down a deer at 250m. I am willing to listen if the 270 is the best choice.

Most centrefires that shoot a bullet weighing at least 100 grains and of a diameter of 6mm (.243) will take deer at 250m reliably.

Between the two you mentinoned? Its paper rock scissors. I'd go .270 for its availability

25 06 goes well, I still have the first centerfire I brought. Tikka coff coff m695 in 25 06 would hate to think how many rounds it's fired amd still shoots silly well, 100gr bt go well out of it but she's just sitting there now. . .

Don't know what ammo is like over there but I shoot a 6.5x55SE and it smashes everything out to about 400m with a 129gr SST.

I used to shoot for coin with a bloke that has shot shitloads of deer with a 25 06.
Uses 100gr interlocks. Have to say I was impressed with how well it kills.
He went from a 270 to the 06 and hasn't looked back.

Criteria,deer/goats @ 250y or less, may as well chuck in pig/cham/thar as well.

Smaller than 270....... some more information here would help, why smaller and in what way? Is it a blast/recoil issue with 270? if so 25/-06 may not help you much.

223 and up will do what you want no problem tho I wont recommend 223 to a new shooter, first you have to understand anatomy and be a decent shot. 7.62x39 would also do what you want but the likes of 243,260,7mm08,308 would do it better with the option of extending the range a bit when you are confident and capable.

2506 with 117 Sierra Prohunters puts down large bodied Tahr at and past 400 quite comfortably, deer are much easier to kill - fills the criteria set.

A short barrelled 270 in a light rifle will boot, a long barrelled 2506 in a medium weight rifle will not, reverse that and the recoil will be similar, lots of variables, but a newbie would be well served by .243 to learn rifle handling and use skills.

Yeah either. I shoot a .270 but often think about a 25/06, has less recoil.
