Diy sloppy action repair

Hi all. Dragged an old u/o 12g shotgun out of the safe today...
Its a tidy shotgun but got a super sloppy action.. so thinking i might have a play and try tighten things up. If it doesn't work no big loss but i figure its worth a shot ;) . Has anyone here attempted this with any success?
I'm a fitter welder and have most tools/machines needed for my trade so thought I'd ask here for other peoples ideas/opinions before i get stuck into it.

The slop is only sideways too, seems good every other way.

One method is to tap the under side of the locking block thingys to flare them slightly in the square holes , thereby reducing the sideways play.

Yeah that would also be a quick easy solution. I was thinking about tig welding some of the worn faces to build them up then somehow surfacing it down to a nice fit, but i know thats going to be a very slow tedious job and i wasn't born with the best of patients.

hi Kiwilad,
traditionally one would replace the pin that the that the action hinges on, the pins were made to wear first as opposed to building up the worn surfaces.
this info came from an old gunsmith who was apprenticed to webly and scott in england

Hi. Thanks for your comment. I am aware that would be the correct way to go about it but the guns really not worth doing that to. Oddly enough the hinge area doesn't seem to be where "most" of the slop is coming from, its more the surfaces about that. I guess it probably all starts with wear on the hinge though.
When i get some spare time I'll have a play and see what i can do.

Basically you build up the worn surfaces and hand fit. Slow process but thats how you do it properly...

Sideways slop in an U/O action can usually be cured by compressing the action walls gently in protected vise jaws.

Thanks for that. I had contemplated doing that too. I might give the a shot now and see where that leads me. Im all for quick and easy!
