I've tried both, I like the braked suppressor, to be fair without measuring equipment I couldn't pick the difference in noise as a shooter, but I could definitely feel the difference in recoil reduction (placebo effect maybe but it works for me).
Maybe the direction the ports vent the gas doesn't affect the shooter behind the but ? (stand next to someone using a brake vs behind them you'll see what I mean).
Who knows maybe it is just marketing and I'm a sucker for it, but maybe it's not.

Yes suppressors are not hearing safe , I said that already, that was my point. This makes them less hearing safe yes?. and for the sake of some recoil reduction. Recoil wont hurt you, very loud noise will.
So it seems he only time they might have some purpose is for the idiots that might take a snap shot with a muzzel brake? :D Id rather use electronic muffs but I havnt found that to ever be an issue outside of the internet.
It is funny though isnt it? Most threads on suppressors are " which one is the best, which one gives the best noise reduction", now that's out the window completely and its morphed into some sort frankenbrake. :D
I cant see a use for it personally but each to their own. :thumbsup:

I bought one to hopefully rectify a bit of muzzle jump on my rifle, recoil isn't an issue.

Haven't used it yet but if all goes to plan i'll take it down the range this sunday and have a crack :)

On the A-tec H2 I can’t tell the difference in terms of noise but make a noticeable difference in recoil. At the time I thought it was a gimmick and was happy to change my mind after trying.

Just received the dpt and looking forward to try next week

The ATec one is bored for .375 so I wouldn't stress that much.

Well I was going to get one, but despite buying a couple hose clamps I still can’t get the front baffles off, I’m going to take to my mates workshop, worse case I’ll need a new suppressor to go with the brake cap :D

Remember the front cap first 2 are one piece!

Pretty sure that end one should come off. I take mine apart reasonably frequently after I discovered how quick they can cement to each other.

Those last three should separate. Try heating them up first.

This is how mine comes apart (MK2 non magnum)

Then use silver nickel or another non-copper anti seize on the threads, it will help you to get the thing apart. Warming the threads up will help too as they expand when hot aka after a few shots and workup tighter - makes it feel like the thing has been assembled hydraulically...

Our DPT are quieter than new. We religiously clean them. Wish I had them in 1975 using a 270 BSA CF2. As Chalie Janes would describe it ... ka flaming boom.

Hi all, interesting thread, I have been using suppressors for 20 odd years now and believe they have a few advantages for the hunter. Firstly they definitely get the noise down below the single point exposure level for hearing loss, if you were repeatedly firing through the suppressor the noise would still be above levels that cause hearing loss. In a previous life managing professional hunters the straight can reduced the noise for the shooter, their dog's hearing wasn't hurt anywhere as much compared to no can and shooting over top of them, so didn't need retiring at 6 years of age due to deafness, and the goats and deer were often confused as to where the noise of the report came from allowing for multiple kills on many occasions. Hunting with ear muffs that filter the loud noise out doesn't work in the bush hunting scenario as sense of direction to a noise is lost when using them, you may hear a goat or deer but won't have any idea which direction to look. I have an early Hardy (12 years old) suppressor with a brake machined into the front cap and I can't notice any difference in sound when shooting, however if I am a bystander it certainly is louder. In open country where you generally have more time to shoot, a brake and grade 5 muffs are certainly an option, however for a North Island bush hunter they are not.
I feel the combination of a suppressor, a decent recoil pad, and a good trigger allow many people to shoot calibres that in their raw form would have been a bit much horsepower for them. With less recoil we all are able to be more confident with our shooting which should mean more one shot humane kills.
