    Entry level rifle.

Hi looking at getting my first hunting rifle soon, and would like to know your thoughts if what i am planning on getting is suitable or if there are betting options.

Will be going for deer (but if I see a goat it will be getting shot) in public land around Wellington
After looking around and reading reviews etc, I am looking at getting a Howa 1500 (prefer stainless not the best at maintaining things..) .308 for cal
scope was thinking 4x don't think i'll be doing any long range shots on Wellington public land?

Haven't had much experience with .308 but seams to be the safe bet, ex army so mainly shot with 5.56

    Thanks

Sounds perfect. Buy 2nd hand, not much point in getting a brand new one. That will leave a bit more cash for a better scope.
Maybe consider a 3-9x40 scope? You can leave it on low power if that's what you prefer to use but if you need magnification it's there. Again, look out for 2nd hand ones - ask on this forum and search Trademe and you'll find a good deal

Also regarding gun choice, if you're set on a Howa that's fine but Savage and Marlin make good guns around the same price range (I have 2 Savages and my mates have Howas which are pretty much on par).
Might be able to get a 2nd hand Tikka for a similar price and they are accuracy guaranteed

I have a stainless 6.5x55 Howa that I'm thinking of selling if you aren't set on .308... It's brand new, bought it a couple of months back and haven't taken it out of the safe yet.

Pretty much anything but the Axis or Edge.

Never owned one but the one I've seen was shit compared to the other models. I have a Weather Warrior and Trophy Hunter. The Weather warrior is stainless with metal magazine and bottom metal. The Trophy Hunter I have is blued (available in stainless) and comes as a package with a Weaver scope. Both come with the awesome trigger but the Axis doesn't.
