Fellas - I need some inspiration

The Wife, she's asked for a new rifle, for Her.

This, is a good thing. Her specifications are however a little different to what I'm used to. The conversation so far has resulted in the following firm requirements:
    • Open sights - no optics
    • Light carbine
    • Well balanced for off-hand, kneeling and sitting shooting
    • Not a monster cartridge, mostly vermin and paper usage, but capable of shooting a small deer in the neck (she likes young venisons)
    • So centrefire obviously, but not a big one - got to be capable of proper MOA accuracy
We haven't specified action type, bolt would be obvious, but we could be looking at a lever gun.

The hankering after a rifle "like this" comes from her Army days, when she ran around with an R4 (5.56) shooting targets with alarming proficiency. Now obviously, a semi is not an option but she wouldn't have wanted one anyway.

What haven't I thought of fellas? I've been through the mini-actions and so on, but open sights is a problem.

    Any suggestions? New or used.

It takes 43 muscle's to frown and 17 to smile, but only 3 for proper trigger pull.

some of the Zastava mini mausers do have open sights...the one in hornet I looked at before buying my .223 had them and I was pissed mine didnt.
sounds like .223 is the obvious choice.......or maybe find an old vixen with open sights in trebly........

It would be lovely, but maybe a bit too nostalgic. This rifle will get a hard time, and $2k++ for an antique won't float her boat.

I can almost guarantee that if you put a Vixen .222 in her hands she would be ruined for life and nothing else would do from that point on

Don’t forget that the open sights were a condition , and the Sako’s came with a great factory aperture sight set for 100m & 200m

Not that easy to load Im picking, and empties will ding the underneath of the scope but the case hardening and woodwork are attractive. What cal is it now.

Could you use a mini action in a chassis with a full pic rail on top and open sights from a naughty rifle or are they now banned?

Depending on budget, there are a couple things here that might suit -

Sako Hunter (wood blued), with open sights in 22-250

Sako Bavarian (wood blued), with open sights & set trigger in .223 with 1/8 twist, .243, or 22-250
