First Tippmann M4s in 22wmr have landed

Have just seen last night that the first of the new Tippmann ARs in 22wmr have popped up for sale! At a RRP of $2499($2349 at Reloders, but sold out, more due Feb), they’re definitely the cheapest rimfire AR that isn’t in 22lr. I think a key make or brake will be IF they run well suppressed, without significant FTF and jams, only time will tell, but if they can do what they did the 22lr version, make an excellent rifle, and at $2000 cheaper than a gunceaft 22mag AR, they should be onto a winner!!

Im curious as to the use case of these. Won't be able to use them in rimfire competitions (SPARC series etc). Maybe service rifle?

Possibly a good pest control gun, but you would be into big money once you put a thermal on it. Would almost be worth trying to get a P endorsement for a real AR.

22plinkster did a good video on them

Got one, put over 200 rnds through it already absolutely flawless. Two thirds running a dpt suppressor. Teamed up with a sytong lm 25 thermal absolutely deadly on possums and rabbits

I'd say the only real use case would be small landholders with goats who don't qualify for a P gun. Although 22 mag is not enough for goats IMO.

That's a lot of money for shooting tactical rabbits 30 metres further away.

(So saying, and I am slightly blushing as I write this, I would like an M1 carbine in .22 mag...)

I'm guessing these are being bought for pest control wallabies, peacocks, goats, etc.

Where guys want a big more ompf than 22lr but can't get a P category licence. Maybe service rifle too.

Definitely an expensive toy, but not that bad really.
If all you are wanting is to make noise and bang steel then it's cheaper to feed than a straight pull AR.

A semi-auto 22mag would make a great pest gun if you really need speed. But I reckon a howa mini with a bunch of spare magazines, wouldn't be much slower and a damn sight more useful.

Old man has one now. Commercial pest control. He has P but plenty of doc tenders state only rimfire to be used. He has a contract around the Hermitage at Mt Cook for example and all shooting within a certain distance of the buildings etc must be rimfire only. Gets expensive using an AR to cull rabbits and hares anyhow..

The platform itself is also attractive to the commercial guys as if you can have your complete system across a single platform ie:AR15 your proficiency at getting shit done in the dark etc becomes a lot better. He has a tippman 22lr also and AR15 so everything is same controls, same handgrips, same suppresor, same mounts and thermals etc and he tells me he likes the simplicity of the AR15 takedown especially when running hundreds of rounds a night through a suppressed rimfire, everything else he used beforehand ie: cz 512, excel arms, mag research all require fiddly takedown in the field

Completely agree. I just note professionals are different boat to the rest of us.

Had mine out today for its first run. Only got to do serious accuracy testing at 50m - shot 30gr V max, 45gr Critical Defense and 40gr Super X well below 1".

I moved out to 100, but we had a hiccup - broken disconnector in the fire control group. I have replaced the whole thing with an Elfman unit, so might sneak back out tomorrow.

I got mine for service rifle club days, as well as shooting geese and goats on the farms I occasionally have access to.

Whole different creature to a 22lr semi. Some loads feel like a 223 AR with the gas dialed back. It's fun.

Exactly the same for me, my Tippmann is cut to the same length, same handguard and similar grip and stock as my P cat AR so that I get all the muscle memory from the day to day jobs when I need to take the AR out instead.

Some preliminary accuracy testing. My particular rifle favours the two Hornady branded loads. Group sizes were almost identical at 50m

Do these things have magazines of more than 10 rounds legal in NZ on P2? And on related note is it still illegal to get more than 10 rd mags in 22LR on P1/2? It amused me that pest controllers could legally import 30rd mags for AR15s but could not import 15 or 25rd 10/22 mags. The reason I ask is if P1/2 people can use magazines of more than 10 rds in 22mag, then does the associated rifle become a P1 rifle like would have been the case under E category? I have not seen anything about this in the legislation.
