As soon as you have a high capacity mag for a firearm it becomes a P endorsement firearm (regardless of what capacity mag is in it) and can only be used for P endorsement activities. I looked at getting a P endorsement and a mag extension for my shotgun for goose hunting, but I was told that then I couldn't use it for duck shooting.

@Rich007 did you clarify that with PNHQ? I fully understand that a shotgun wiht a fixed mag exceeding 5 rds is P only, but is there any legislation for a firearms wiht a detachable magazine, which is A cat with 10rd, but P cat with more than 10? I have not seen this answered in the legislation but could have missed something.

I don't think legislation prevents the importation of a high capacity 0.22 mag, It's just that the magazine is the prohibited item in that instance, not the rifle. You require the endorsement/s to own the prohibited magazine, it doesn't affect the rifle.

@Roamr things may have changed but certainly when P1/2 was started in 2019/20 22lr mags were restricted to 10rds only, on the assumption it is easy enough to carry multiple loaded mags. I agree I don't think this was in legislation but the police would not issue import permits for more than 10rds. I assumed at the time that this was to avoid the confusion we had wiht A vs E cat semi autos, where the only significant difference was the mag capacity. It made sense that all semi auto rimfires were to be A cat only, and all semi atuo centrefires to be P only, but with so many pest controlers using these rifles it made me wonder if the rules had changed and more than 10rd mags were allowed.

I got this from the Firearms Safety Authority. I didn't ask about firearms with detachable magazines, but don't think it would be any different. The point was that I couldn't take the magazine extension off and use it for duckshooting as it would be a P endorsement firearm

That answers the question thanks, they are obviously using the same rules as under E cat.
