Can you shorten and thread a fluted barrel without degrading the accuracy beyond reason?

No problem at all.... just looks funny at the end... onli effect on accuracy shud be to muzzle velocity....
Awesome thanks for that. Makes my next purchase a little easier.
If you are not going to suppress get a bit of blank barrel bored out and threaded so it fits on the end and it won't even look funny... I hope you can visualise what I mean cause that was a shit way of describing it haha
Some calibers don't perform as well with shorter barrels. That being said, when you shorten a barrel, it is advisable to crown the muzzle; this ensures a clean and square cut for better accuracy. Also, when re-installing the barrel, be sure to check headspace.
Regards,
Drifter
hey drifter is a 7mm08 ok when shortened for a can. i am talking 3 inches?
thats good i am thinking of getting mine done
I get what you mean with the blank barrel, much the same as a thread protector appearance.
My question was more based around the loss of mass at the tip of the barrel and exposed flutes would lead to uneven movement caused by heat.
I'm happy enough it will be fine.
Thanks all
what are you getting? wyndam?
Looking at R15. 24" is a little long though.
where is the gas block?
long barrel usually means rifle gass system
sometimes cutting also reduces reliability, as there is less barrel for the pressure to build up in to cycle the action
best to choose the barrel length you want rather than modify, then you have factory standard reliability rather than botchy modification reliablity.
chances are there will be no issue tho.
what are you paying for the R15? as there are better options out there

Just a bit more info FYI,
2k with extras. They do 18" version as well. Gas block on the 24" is just in front of the foreend.
Do you have an AR you would like to sell to me cheaper?
Thanks for the link.
no I am in love with my Rock river one.
just have a good look around before you buy one. you dont need to buy the first one you see, or the one with the worst paint job or trigger.
while you hold the money, you hold the power
Been waiting for a while. I personally don't mind the triggers or the paint job on them. Would like an RRA or CMMG but the amount you spend for bare rifle I could never get it by the Mrs.
Unless you know of somewhere I can get another decent one for around the 2k mark. NEA look too spikey to touch haha, would probably graze my back
I have a wyndim sitting beside my RRA at the moment, fluited barrel, ace stock free float forend, all the nice bits $2500 my mate payed for it. right next to it a NEA $2300 as its the 18 inch version
long story short the wyndim is friggen nice and would have it in a heart beat. the nea is a bit blocky for my liking and the forend, pistol grip and stock arnt as nice
just decide exactly how you want your rifle to end up then shop for that. its the extra bits that cost the money.
case in point I have a new light weight barrel on its way and with gas block and gas tube its costing an extra $615
Yeah I'm of the same opinion on the NEA. I do like the windym and talking to outdoorsupplys they are bringing in some of the 16" varients.
The R15 comes with 500 odd rounds of ammo, sights, extra mag and a few other bits and bobs though.
Hmmm your starting to give me too much to think about again. The extra bits is where the boss comes into play, massive rock brought me only so many brownie points and alot of those were spent on my 338lm haha
