I know you’re not travelling with Air New Zealand, but you may want to check if their crazy code share restrictions apply to your airline. It’s caught me in the past. Here are the restrictions from air New Zealand’s website.

    Connecting to another airline's aircraft:

We can't transfer any bag containing a firearm or ammunition to another airline (including our codeshare partners).
When planning your travel, you will need to allow for more time to clear customs, collect your bags and check them in with the new airline.
It is your responsibility to declare the firearm and ammunition to the new airline.
All flights in your itinerary must be booked under the operating carrier's flight numbers. For example, if you have a flight operated by United Airlines, it must been booked with a UA flight number (UA923) and not with an Air New Zealand codeshare flight number (NZ9834).

Yeah that's definitely a trap there.
Seems to make more sense to book the same airline the whole way, or to book flights individually rather than get caught out by this and miss a connecting flight.

Also beware of your destination, for example Manchester airport no longer accept firearms at departures nor arrivals. You have to fly Heathrow or Edinburgh or Glasgow, I m not sure regarding Birmingham.

@Friwi when you flew with Emirates and Qatar were there any requirements to permits/permissions for the stop over airport/country?

I see that the UAE says guns aren't allowed into the country, but clearly you can transit through Dubai airport.

Be careful of the partner airlines they will likely use from either Qatar or Dubai. We have had some nightmare experience with Turkish air when flying too Kyrgyztanstan.

You have to ask them. I believe can take care of your guns at the airport while your are visiting for a few days Qatar.
I do not know for Dubai. Stopover and traveling with guns is where it becomes a burden.
I probably won’t do it again myself.
