    flying jetstar with firearms

I have a flight from Auckland to chch at the end of the month and return early next month and will have a case of rifles in both directions
from what I've read online how i understand it you only need a dangerous goods permit if carrying ammo, I won't be taking ammo, and the firearms in question are antiques

I called Jet Star to confirm and came to the same outcome, but I certainly didn't get left with a lot of confidence that I wasn't going to get asked for a dangerous goods permit at the airport (was more a mmm ah yeah, I think that's right)

I normally fly air nz and they are easy 1st time with Jetstar as I took the cheap option (half the cost) air nz likes a ph call at least 24 hours before to let them know that you will have a firearm apart from that it's pretty much common-sense bolt out in a locked hard case

I'm pretty sure I do not need the DG permit with the lack of ammo, and I can just show up and declare the firearm at check-in
my mate I'm going to stay with has come up here a couple of times with Jet Star, but he had the DG permit- no issues at all

I just want to make sure I'm not going to have issues as I already find flying a bit hectic

anyone can confirm for certain about permits etc.

Not quite the info you're after, but one thing to make sure of is that the bolt is in separate checked in ammo. I know of someone who was told by the airline that it was ok as carry on, but they were detained at security check in and police were contacted due to having the bolt in their carry on.

Might seem obvious but despite that, I can tell this true story. The moral being that what the airline might allow, isn't necessarily allowed by avsec. Make sure you have the ok from both.

ammo up to a limit of X??? 3kg??? is all good if packed in a separate pack (each round single packed so rounds can't knock together so bulk buckets are a no go). bolts separated from the rifle in same bag as ammo or a tigger lock fitted for lever or other style.
so you need 2 checked bags and need to tell the airline some time in advance of turning up.
I have only traveled air NZ domestically with rifles. and not in the last 3 years.

looks like i'm wrong with some of my info above, ie air NZ lets you take up to 5kg of ammo and container.

The Sako Gamehead ammo in the 50 round box isn't suitable as airline ammo - no separation in the box... I have heard of some airlines getting twisted up over repacked ammo too - but needs must.

    I am not talking ammunition
At all question is purely about the firearm

Im not dumb enough to put parts in my carry on
    That’s common sense right there

Theyre actually ahead of Air NZ atm on dep/arr stats. Was a big news interview on it recently. I fly them on a regular basis and they are excellent.

@rambo-6mmrem ( stupid forum handle ) is just stressed to the max because the one rifle he's bringing back to the Mainland ( where all good vintage rifles belong ) is for me.

But my experience with Jetstar has all been good.
Multiple flights with multiple rifles to and from Auckland.
Only delay was arriving back in CHCH really late one night and there was only one staff member who could release my gun cases and it took them a while to find them.

But like Rambo I have never tried to take vintage ammo as well.

Last trip I had a huge carton of new old stock obsolete unorimed brass in Auckland and I freighted it home just to keep it simple
