If there's anyone on this forum who'd know what it is, it's gundoc. It's definitely a G1, I own one with a "C" series number too. I believe there were a whole bunch imported by a firearm store in Wellington during the 1980s if I'm not mistaken. According to the guys on the FALfiles.com forum, the date range for my (and I suspect yours), is around the 1958 range. Most metric pattern FN FALs I've seen in NZ have been the G1 variant. There are a few StG 58s (the Austrian equivalent) out there too.

I've modified mine somewhat by changing the handguards (standard metal ones heat up quickly), grips, the stock and dust cover. Previous owner shortened the barrel. What's interesting is that my stock wooden furniture is different to yours, mine's more of a cherry colour. What woods were used, I've no idea.

Mine has these proof marks which I believe stand for Bundesministerium der Verteidigung? It's difficult to see in the photo but I suspect these might not be evident on the other rifle?

Mine, which is about 40 rifles out from the one riflegus posted, has the same markings plus the same Hamberg property stamp, striked through to show it has been sold out of service.

@riflegus I had a G1 identical to the one you are looking at except it came with a plastic pistol grip and a loop onto the stock to make it A-Cat. Sold all the parts with it though so look at the underneath of the stock for any screw holes. They have a chrome bore. Looks like a nice example.

    I have one as well.
Its about 70 rifles out from the one first posted.
I did a double take when I saw it as its a dead ringer for mine. Mine still has the orginal leather sling mind you.
Mine is a good shooter, the bore is in very good condition.
Trigger is heavy as which is the only bad thing about it.
    Love the in built bi-pod.

Gotta love them. Mines different again. Its serialed with a 4 digit number that matches on upper lower carrier and bolt. Selector markings are S R and A and its stamped "FAL.cal.308" behind the charging handle.
