If there's anyone on this forum who'd know what it is, it's gundoc. It's definitely a G1, I own one with a "C" series number too. I believe there were a whole bunch imported by a firearm store in Wellington during the 1980s if I'm not mistaken. According to the guys on the FALfiles.com forum, the date range for my (and I suspect yours), is around the 1958 range. Most metric pattern FN FALs I've seen in NZ have been the G1 variant. There are a few StG 58s (the Austrian equivalent) out there too.
I've modified mine somewhat by changing the handguards (standard metal ones heat up quickly), grips, the stock and dust cover. Previous owner shortened the barrel. What's interesting is that my stock wooden furniture is different to yours, mine's more of a cherry colour. What woods were used, I've no idea.
