    foggy scope

My weaver classic has started fogging up on the inside. Does anyone know if the is still someone around that can fix them or is it now the kids toy. Warranty is not an option as I'm not the first owner and don't have any form of receipts for it like weaver warranty stipulates. cheers

This is a couple of years old so the guy mentioned may not be around anymore https://www.nzhuntingandshooting.co....repairs-47337/

As posted, Weaver was closed by its parent compnay several years ago. Maybe Bushnell managed Wever warranty claims afterwards but as you have stated warranty not an option for you.

A quick fix is to gently warm the scope say in hot water cupboard for a couple of days until the fogging has all evaporated. Steal a bottle of Mrs clear nail varnish and apply a thin band of this around the edges of the lenses against the scope bells. Let dry. I used this many times when bush bound hunting for long periods of time. The fix works pretty well sealing out moisture.

The other is get some old rice and loosen a joint and dump the lot in a bag that seals. Vac pac would be an option as it gets rid of the gas that's contaminated. Rice absorbs the remaining moisture... After that, find a mate with a tig welder and using the same bag method purge the bag with argon shield gas and reassemble the scope. Then try the nail polish trick, masking tape around the joint on each side let's you get a clean line...

Did this with my shitty old Weaver K4. It initially fogged up whilst on a hunt. Pissed me off so much that I used my knife across the 2 slots on the front lens and removed the lens and cleaned off the moisture. Reassembled and it was OK for the rest of the hunt.

When I got home I removed the same lens, stood scope upright in a very low setting oven for a couple of hours or so, then reassembeld it inside the oven. Never fogged again even though in theory I had needed to get scope above 100 degrees C to flash off the moisture.

Another scope I did the same except I did it at work and then ran dry nitrogen into it before reassembling.

If there was an issue with faulty seals or O rings my bubba method never addressed that but certainly my Weaver never played up again.

I might add that these were less than top of the line scopes. If they had been I would have sent them to the maker.

You don't need to mask with masking tape, just screw lens in with small gap left and paint nail varnish around thread, screw up to tight.

Cheers for the comments I think I will go down the track of getting it fixed by a pro and keep as a spare scope.

I put a couple of those moisture catching thingies that comes with medication that keeps the meds dry inside the scope to suck up the moisture and was lucky the place I worked at had Nitrogen and working inside a plastic bag regassed the scope...a small pill container holds about three of them for carrying into fly in blocks, nothing worse than a fogged up scope miles from home....I think tyre shops have Nitrogen, nip down to one and re-gas it after drying it out.
