I used this link to learn how to make maps but the easy way was to just use
NZ Topo Map - New Zealand Topographic Map
Find your hunting area and then reduce the options by clicking the downward arrow on the left. Then follow the prompts to make a KMZ file. This is the file you dump in your GPS when its linked to your laptop (find the custom maps file). Then just enable the custom maps, under settings - maps.

You might need to set your coordinates settings to 'New Zealand TM' on both your GPS and the mapping program (like the one above) to ensure your gps can find your new map area.
