    General, bush and long range

Hey Folks just after some input.

    So....

    I currently have 2 rifles: a 20" 308 and 20" 284win.

Which covers General and General/ respectively.

However I have a spare Burris SixX 2-12x40 which is optically fantastic and is spare, its served me well and I really like it.

However the one thing I feel I'm missing is a 16" 308 in my safe- preferably a Weatherby, howa or Bergara Nz special hunter model.

Being that I have a optic and suppressor ready to rock am I complicating things for myself? Just a sub 300y handy rifle that's quick and isn't a single shot.

    Cheers folks

See if you can find a Ruger Scout. 308, 16 inch barrel, 10,5 and 3 shot mags available. If you get the blued ones they come with a 5/8x24 threaded flash hider,

Also have shot my 16.5 inch 308 well past 300 so you will be alright. Mine is however a single shot.

If it was me in your situation I'd chop the existing 308 and be done with it.

Or if you don't want to go too drastic on the 308, get another barrel, chop that, and fit it in place of the original. Put the original away.

Means you can turn it back into what it was if need be.

Whether that makes financial sense might be another question.

Dont worry folks I just bought a model 7 in 7mm08 off here.

    It has a 18inch barrel.

I leave my 308 as is because it shoots so well and I hate to break what isn't broke.

I got given a old 303 last year by my Neighbour and it's all been checked out as safe to fire so I may have a play around with sub loads in that :-)

And yes @berg243 I've litterly just proved you're point hahahaha

mate, if you are going for a sub 200 mtr bush only rifle with a short barrel why not go to something with a bigger hole.
larger hole will be more efficient in a short barrel and make a bigger hole.
How about something in the 35 cal range. ie 358 win. just run some of your 308 shells though a standard neck expanding, sizing die and hay presto.
Other wise you have the 35 rem or 35 Legend, then all the 44/45 cal variants.
In my 358win I shoot 158gr pistol bullets over trail boss 16-1700 fps for goats up close and personal like and 225gr for large game.

I use a rossi 44mag with a trs 25 on top for the bush. Really small rifle, light enough and easy to carry around.

Your 284 wont be performing optimally for long range with that piggy barrel.
Get it rebarrelled to 24” and chop the 308 to 18”.
That way, for general use at a pinch, the 308 would be ok to 300 and the 284 would be useable in the bush butyoud have available performance in either bush or long range most of yhe time by choosing the appropriate semi specialised unit.
