True about the older Leupold glass.
I used a vx1 2-7 x 32 on my 7mm08 when I first got it and it was reliable but not so good in low light in the bush. Part of the problem was the crosshairs are too fine. Like looking through the end of a beer botle compared to european (swaro, kahles, zeiss, S&B) and VX3 but great at the price. Note that Swarovski (Z3 Z5) and Zeiss (conquest) have american series you can recognise by having inch tubes and moa adjustments not metric and they are pretty good too perhaps not as rugged as Leupold.
Do get a range finder first. Under 200m —> good to go. Over 200m —> think twice.
