"I really like the cartridge, it makes the 223 look like exactly what it is, underpowered for general hunting duties on anything other than small pests....Flame on."
What's the point of flaming?
It was an obvious troll.
However you could say that about any cal larger than the 223, the grendel being one of them.
Especially when regarding an amateur hunter/marksman.

I would rate myself with a .223, a pair of under $400 binos and no range finder for any NZ hunting under 250 yards against anyone with any other combo they want to challenge me on.
And because I've I've had a couple or so wines, they can be any age too. :)
I reserve the right to withdraw this boast in the morning.
On the ballistics calculator it just craps all over my .223 loads. But in saying that, I have and witnessed others pull off some amazing shots with .223's. I've only shot one deer with a .223, but I've shot tons of goats and it just smashes them with the right bullets. I wouldn't feel undergunned if I could only have a .223. It's cheap, accurate and effective if you understand it's limitations. Grendel is expensive and much higher performance. You don't want to lose any brass.
I like the 223. Cheap brass, cheap projectiles, pretty good bang for your buck.
Grendal is an underpowered piece of crap compared to a 50bmg
I have witnessed a 500 y (ranged many years later) 223 shot on a small fallow buck. Perfect hilar shot. Went maybe ten meters then rolled down the hill.
The perfect shot was a good gestimation but basicly a fluke.
It had the energy to do the job in that case but it would be madness to recommend shots of that nature even with proper ranging and dialing.
Id call it a good 200m cal on deer in open country.

If my 223 is inadequate there is no hope for my new K Hornet[emoji12]
I plan to use that for all meat hunting from now on. One for one so far.
Good thing about a lot of my hunting on the coast you have to walk away from deer to get a medium range shot or sit a ways away and wait them out.
Can't be fucked with that. I rather get amongst them.
To be fair if I didn't need the odd neck or rib shot I could shoot most of my meat deer with a 22 or shotgun.

I would feel a bit iffy about taking a 500m shot on a deer using the loads I have played around with in my Grendel to be honest.
Goat is no different to a deer apart from deer having a bigger mellon in general.
Shot a few animals in deer traps with the 22 and 22 subs. Flattened them. So had no qualms shooting them with a 22 when I bumped into them walking around. Not a big deal really. But I spose it might be to people that get no closer to their animals than a few hundred yards.

Never even fired a short I don't think.
The country I mostly hunt for meat dictates the shooting.
It is unique in NZ.
When you know it well and even tho semi open you are rarely shooting further than 50yrds.
And if you are not confident clean shooting an animal you would get fuck all.

What does clean shooting mean Dave?
Used my 10/22 when I had nothing else, headshot a whitetail at 80m, it dropped on the spot and wasn't going anywhere but still alive once I got to it.... Wasn't very happy with myself. Guess a 22 is ok out to 50m or so
Clean shot.
Head, neck or rib. It's what used to be on the docket when you sold a deer. Body shots were almost a third of the price per kilo. Rib shot damage was up to the stockman whether considered clean or not regarding meat damage.
You got top dollar for clean shot carcasses.
We used to have wankers that swapped tags with their shot up ones for clean shot so it was the first thing you looked at when you got the slip or docket. Sometimes the stockman or chiller dude was there to receipt the carcass and that stopped it happening.

I can see that Gibo got mildly excited in post 6003.
Quick one from me;
LWRC A6IC DI 5.56. "RED".

Red cherry?:-)
Here is my Sako 85 243AI that I had originally picked up off @buzzman. This is the first Sako 85 mould made by South Fort Labs (Kiwi Composites) on display at Sika show this year.
Very impressed with the finish. Currently a work in progress, I have a Swaro Z5 to slap on it + will get it cerakoted. Fun times.

@Gibo ......you still pulling out after the 'snip' bro......?......sprayer not a slayer.......
@BRADS will likely have the docking gear handy this time of year too, just in case we want a backup plan.
I've seen it done recently. A pocket knife, soldering iron and a little hook gets the job done
