Gun safe locks

Hi all, just a thought to share with you all. A number of firearm thefts down here (only the ones I know about) all have a common theme. The house is turned upside down until the safe keys are found. In a lot of cases, valuable belongings have been bypassed in the pursuit of the said keys. Made me think, safe security is only as good as the spot you hide the keys....Statistically within 3.0m of the safe. Even the best safe in the world is simple to get into....with the keys.
I am adding additional digital locks to all my stuff for this very reason. Might not be fool proof but hopefully will cost some time in the case of a break in.
Something to ponder maybe.

Hide the safe works well, i have seen a few well disguised gun safes...even the person doing renewal of FAL couldn't find one belonging to a family member recently.

Not being a dick, but maybe don't leave the keys in the house? Rightly or wrongly, can't imagine the police would look kindly on this either. You don't want to lose your FAL in addition to your guns.

I have a hidden small combination lock safe (without a key) elsewhere in the house just for storing other digital safes' backup keys,
so I don't have any obvious skeleton safes keys with me or around the house.

When you see alot of hunting, shooting or big blue shed related stickers on utes and other vehicles you get the idea where to look for rifles. Less bait is probly a good start.

I USED to have them hidden ‘about 3 metres’ of the safe.

Now they’re hidden about 20 metres away in another part of the property (where frequently even I can’t find stuff!).

True.
But a shame we have to hide any evidence of our hobby/way of life.

Electronic locks can fail, especially with moisture or battery issues. I prefer mechanical dial locks since they’re reliable and don’t need power. Key backups are handy, but security depends on key storage.

My keys are always in the car, so if I'm not home the keys aren't either. Plus the safe is hidden and no bumper stickers etc, tho a few deer skulls laying around may give the game away

I get the argument but with todays battery grinders if you live rurally and no1 can hear your f”d anyway!!

My eyes were opened about padlocks years back when Mrs was away with my keys and I needed into safe. The edge of file went through staple of padlock in under a minute!!!!

All my carpentry gear and angle grinders,pinch bars and crow bars stored about 3 mtrs from safe.ffs.Might as well leave the safe unlocked.

I've got a third safe for that stuff.
Sure surprised the vettor at renewal time.

Guess I'm lucky our house only empty about 6 days year.

lots of those cheap electronic locks can be opened with a strong magnet as they are locked by solenoid action

You need to remember we have a lot more to lose than "ordinary people". Main reason for good hiding places for safe keys is to keep the wife from knowing exactly what you have, lest the revenge shoe and boutique shopping happens

I just registered and left the list on the kitchen bench. My daughter found and said shit, really showed it to mum and I was questioned on numbers.
But very happy now that many are disappearing in my clean out

If you've got a bookshelf, hollow out a chunk of pages in the centre of a book you don't need, pop the keys in there, and Bob's your Aunty.
