    Gunsmith Options

Does anyone know a smith with the skills and required equipment to rechamber and machine a 17M2 to 17HMR to fit a sako quad?

Never had custom work carried out myself, always waited for others to sell theirs so not to sure where to start.

Trying to work out the economics of fitting this barrel before purchasing

    Thanks

Hugh Bradley @ Bradley Barrels or Allen Carr would be worth a shot...

Couldn't you just get the 17HMR factory quad barrel? Would there be much of a price difference?

Haha yeah I have the feeling that they all will with me wanting it to fit in to a quad.
I suspect it will be far far cheaper to just go with a factory barrel but that's not always the name of the game and I'm not after a skinny profile

Gun city has the 17hmr Barrel for $499 but skinny profile.
Rather something that fills the range channel better

Dean Maisey reamed a .17m2 Ruger barrel out to .17hmr for me, although it was to fit back onto a Ruger 77/17 so less work than what you're thinking of. He did a good job. Cost $200 including changing the caliber engraving on the barrel and return shipping.

That's the info I'm after, thanks a lot.
So I would expect triple that at least I guess. Kind of deflates that idea probably.

Have asked around for some price estimates so will be curious to see what they come back with.

I'm a sucker for a heavy barrel. I have one in 17hmr, if I did it again I wouldn't go heavy barrel.
there just no need for it in such a small round for what I use it for.

I ve done the bull barrel thing also, looks cool but I don't think it's worth the real world hassle it brings.
I had a heavy barrel 223, shot very well, super accurate but the carry around the hills was a prick and it had to be sot off a bipod as free hand shooting was a workout.
Sold it and ended up with another 223 but just a standard barrel..... shot just as well and was a much easier rifle to hunt with.

I shoot a 17HMR a lot ( living in central ,rabbits everywhere ) if the 223 could handle the rate of fire and heat in a standard barrel a HMR isn't going to suffer problems.
A heavy barrel won't in my experience make a rifle a better shooter in the field.

I know a guy with a Quad range in 22LR and he tried a hunter weight barrel and found it shot better than the heavy barrel... needless to say he sold the heavy barrel!
