    H&F pukekohe

so I thought i'd wander in and have a look...... I was in their gun room and a bloke comes in and says to the guy hes lookin for a rifle (in a fresh English accent).....hes just got his gun liscence and hes heading to fiordland in march ...... now theres a selection of rifles on the wall , tikka sako Remington howa browning ruger , the usual suspects. anyways I would have thought he would have let him try a few different breeds for fit and feel and then talk calibre but no straight into the hard sell on a howa in either 270 or 308.... now not saying anything wrong with either calibre or howa but a howa wont fit or feel right to everyone and being a newbie he would need to be comfortable with what hes handling... didn't stick around for the calibre push ..... but hope he was advised to go with something suitable for north island bush (either of those would be ok but other other options. (308 being what I would choose just because of the cheapish ammo), fiordland bugle comes up once a year and theres a whole other 11 months which he would be chasing sika reds and maybe fallow.

my point is the guy didn't really know what he needed and was trusting the guy to help .......im not convinced he was gonna get the best advise

but then I guess this is normal in retail gunshops

I saw an ad saying they were looking for a "firearms specialist".

    Found it:

Franklin Hunting&Fishing is looking for a fire arms specialist to join our team on a full time basis
    Email cv to pukekohe@huntfish.co.nz

Agree with what your saying scotty but maybe the "guy" (specialist) doesn't know/hasn't been to Fiordland and is on commission (needs the sale). Best bet IMHO is get on the "old blower" and call an H&F in Southland and ask for some advice/direction. Im not going to ask for advice on Sika down here best to ring up North!. On numerous occasions I have approached potential customers and given them some personal advice on alternative options (maybe just bloody nosy) on better suppliers etc. Knowledge is Power!
