    Handed down .308

Hi guys. Recently acquired a rifle of a uncle and not sure what to make of it.
As you can see from the pictures it needs a tidy up, i was told it might be ex military and i thought if anyone might know anything about it it would be you lot.
If its anykind of valuable or historical il try track down some standard parts for the ladder sight and maybe a cleaner stock if not il chuck somekind of optics on it and a cheap stock and use if for a bush rifle. Name: uploadfromtaptalk1449991436229.jpg

You depart with mighty boasts, but you come back having done little.
Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

I think the baling twine is late 1990s as that's when I remember blue first coming in! Before that it was red and green, some cheaper cow cocky still went old school twine but then you had a lot more brakes when baling.

Fabrica De Arrmas Oviedo 1904 is the clue here.

This rifle started out as Spanish Mauser chambered in 7mm Mauser and has been rebarrelled and rechambered in 308w.

This is what it would have looked like in it's original configuration.

If it was mine I'd clean up the metal surfaces and reblue them, refinish the stock and go Bush Hunting.

Okeydokey so pritty much dime a dozen then. The barrel serial no matches the receiver but the bolt dosn't so still the original barrel. Its actually really nice to shoot the action is smooth and tight. And that custom bailing twine just sets it off

    @Cuz

7.62 is the military designation for 308w.
    They are exactly the same.

The rifle has been rebarreled with the original 7mm barrel being replaced with a 30cal barrel.
The new barrel would have been stamped with the receiver number as the receiver number is what designates it as a uniquely numbered Firearm.

The mis-matched bolt is not unusual as whoever rebarreled it would have had to fit and headspace a bolt for the new barrel and they would have used any bolt that was available, maybe the original bolt was damaged or lost.

Also your rear sight is missing the elevation. It should look like this

A good gunsmith could attach a scope mount to your receiver if you wanted.

Unless the stock is badly smashed up then it will be able to salvaged. I have repaired several that were snapped at the pistol grip without any problems. Also added walnut to a fore peice where there bits missing

I think these were re barreled to 308 by the military with a low pressure round. Might be worth finding out.
I wouldn't spend very much on it.
