Haven’t played with a project x but got myself a hybrid 12 months ago (effectively a switch barrel project x) and very happy with it. Zero complaints, would definitely spend the money again and the service out of hardy has been top notch, despite what some fellas on here might try tell you.
Gun city are storing a few of them . If think there is still a 7 prc one in gun city Hamilton.
What’s the coin on one of these ?
The one I played with was terrible but theirs duds from all manufacturers I’m sure
Hmmm you would think that Hardy has been operating so long they would have everything pretty sorted by now. I still see negative comments pop up regularly which makes me wonder. I'd love to support NZ made but don't want to gamble with my own hard earned money either.
Action flexed into stock over the average bedding like serious flex misfired probably 1 in 4 times mag well didn’t fit was binding on action garked the underside of the action it was jammed that hard crown was chipped to bits got it reversed and recrowned and it still wouldn’t shoot I took photos il try dig them out this evening
Presumably they would test fire every rifle build to check function & accuracy? Those issues shouldn't happen if the QC is kept in check.

I don’t have a Project X but this is my hybrid short action. I have a 24 inch 6.5prc & 18 inch 308 barrels . Obviously I need to change the bolt head to suit each barrel. The middle column of targets is a tall target test checking my dialing accuracy, 4-32 Nx8 and it came out at .988 . Left and right column are all single shots then changing barrel/bolt head and altering zero on scope . I was doing a single shot then changing caliber. I’m pretty happy with this and wanted a hybrid so I can remove barrel when I wanted too . My Nx has zero stop, so for the 308 I bottom out the zero to 15 which is where the stop is set, and change windage to 8r . And for the prc I raise elevation 5 to zero mark and correct wind age to zero as well . Ian @ Hardy’s was awesome to deal with and one day I’ll probably need a long action one [emoji23].

Love my hardy. Not a project x but I'm sure they're mint.
What are the Hardy carbon barrels like?
You would think so they were less than helpful on this rifle it sounds like from a lot of people Ian is the one to deal with iv heard nothing but good things the misfire is also not uncommon across project x and hybrids that sort of money id sooner a sako . @Tahr always heard hardy barrels are good their also heavy beasts if that’s a consideration
The rifles sorry project x and hybrids not the barrels so much
Ive acquired a .243 Tikka varmint that Im unlikely to use. Tempted to put a 20" Hardy carbon on it in 22 creedmoor - should bring it back to about standard t3 weight.
Hardy barrels shot lights out!
Very accurate and generally a bit fast that I would expect. Have owned 5 in various chamberings
A bit off topic. I got a featherweight (No 1) contour hardy stainless non-fluted barrel for a lite weight build and it shoots extremely well with a few different bullets. It’s 20 inch and at that length the weight saving on a carbon barrel would be negligible if any at all. From what I’ve read the weight savings only start being more significant with longer barrels. Accuracy wise there’s no benefit to carbon, the only benefit is retailers being able to separate customers from their money.
I’ve got a stainless Hardy barrel, it copper fouled something awful at the start, was picky on loads (6.5PRC) but seems to have settled down now after 200+ rounds thru it, I wouldn’t get another one.
I have two rifles that have trueflights on them that shot very well from the get go.
I have to say Ian Hughes has brilliant customer service when I've been making inquiry's. Would have to agree he makes it tempting to pull the trigger on one of their rifles despite still some of these negative Hardy comments that still surface.
I had Hardys chop and thread my remmy 700 for me a few years ago and they were great to deal with, cheap as chips and i had it back the next day so i was super impressed with the service.
A year or so ago i asked them if they would flute my barrel and bolt and they told me they only work on Tikkas now :(
@Tahr my 22 CM has a Hardy barrel and it goes great. Ian is a huge 22CM fan, so if you start the conversation with him, you’re basically doomed!
On YouTube South Island Rifle Walkers Stewart Island episode the rifle misfires on them whilst on camera. Bit embarrassing for Hardy
Update - Seriously considered doing a complete Project X rifle but in the end finances lead me to make the decision to simply rebarrell my existing rig with one of their carbon wrapped barrels. Went as far as telling Ian go ahead lets do it then received an email outlining the costs to chamber & fit said barrell. WOW that took my breath away! My previous dealings with the likes of Gunworks, Trueflite etc set me an expectation that the market rate was going to cost between $350-$500 for this service. Well Hardy's were well into doubling this plus asking an additional $200 for a muzzle thread. Simply stunned by this.
Myself being a business owner makes me appreciate the difficulties of the current economic climate & how hard it is to make money but this really shocked me.
Guess they wanna supply complete rifles or barrels but have no interest in us mere mortals being able to afford their gunsmithing services to install said product. It's a shame cause there product's look great & my interaction with Ian had left me with no doubt to proceed. Going to come up with a different plan now :XD:
So not a moan about Hardy's service but highlighting the huge difference in gun plumbers rates. Like always do your homework :o
Had a hybrid for 5 years, great rifle very accurate.
Would have another tomorrow.
Buy a barrel and suppressor and get another smith to do the work. I just did on a 16 inch carbon 22cm. Come up mint
Yep, but if the said rifle does not shoot to expectation. Who is blaming who?
I had a carbon barrel supplied and installed by hardy including powder coated brake a few months back,$2500
I've clearly lost touch with current gunsmith charges then. It would appear that $1150 to thread muzzle, chamber & fit barrel is the normal now :TT TT:
if aesthetics are important I think hardy have the best looking rifles by far their stocks/barrels/brakes all line up very nicely for a good looking rig.
Just to put things in perspective,a basic new lathe to start barrel work is around 8k.
A descent size lathe like the one we use everyday is now very close to 40k.
A reamer with its set of gauges is close to $nz500 landed.
So being able to chamber the 5 or 6 most popular cartridges, plus a few exotics, a range of 10 to 15 pilots per calibre, all the indicating tools, lathe tools ,measuring tools indicators…etc you come very close to 6k to 8k.
And if you start chambering more than 150 barrels a year ,you are looking at investing into a cnc lathe . That is what a lot outfits are doing now in the USA.
And you need to be able to pay your tax and put food on the table as well.
Taken off the Gunworks site:
Rebarrel by Gunworks
Rebarrelling prices start $1300 including GST which includes the barrel, fitting, chambering, oxiblast and engraving.
