Thread: Has anyone imported bayonets?

Put a permit to import request in with the police and had it refused. Anyone had this happen or is it just a down right can't import bayonets? M1 garand bayonet.

On what grounds was it refused just out of curiosity?

Customs act 1996 section 54. When I look online can't find a thing. Typical

I brought two in my luggage declared them at customs and they were confiscated and held untill the import licence was done. Took at least 2 months but I do have them.

See customs.govt.nz and search for Prohibited Imports, firearms and weaponry. They are a prohibited import requiring Police approval. May be a case of finding the right AO to get a permit...

As you have what I assume is a e cat rifle that it would fit I'm surprised you had your permit refused. Never done it myself but I have known others to have no problem, they just said that the correct dated one was not available in NZ in suitable condition.

Suppose I better call the AO and find out exactly why. But they are a little average at manakau. Thanks guys

I emailed NZ Police prior to coming over from Australia. Explained that I wanted to bring a SMLE bayonet with me. Got a short reply just asking for my address, received permit within a few weeks.

When I declared it at the airport, stating I had a permit. Nobody cared, didn't ask to see it or the permit. Go figure.

It does seem a bit dumb that they are a prohibited item. You can buy far more dangerous knives at your local sports store, and a bit of gaffa tape around the barrel and the knife and you have yourself the same 'functionality'.

I brought 4 bayonets in from US of A about 3 years ago in one import batch. All with scabbards, 2 x Spanish FR8 and 2 x ersatz German "things".Had to go and get written approval from Constable Plod and then await their arrival.
Customs letter duly arrived telling me they had arrived and been impounded. I toddled out to their depot at AK airport and was told, you can only have one of each type, regardless of holding a police permit for all four. That's it.

So arrived home with only 2. About a year later I received a letter from Customs saying they were going to dispose of the two and to put forward any reasons as to why they should not. I pointed out that I had approval for all four and at least I would like to have the two scabbards for the impounded pair as scabbards were not prohibited imports, but again told no.

I have also brought in from USA and Australia, again with police permits for each but a different times, a Martini Enfield, Martini Henry and a Lee Enfield # 5 bayonet.
Was surprised to find then delivered to my door without the expected Customs impounding letter and a visit to their lair.
Weird but to be expected I suppose and you can blame Comrade Helen as it as she who added bayonets to the list of prohibited items when she and Helen 2 reigned supreme.

Bullocks. You have to wonder what is so terrifying about bayonets.

Looks scary and that is all that matters. Must be a hangover from charging trenches defended by wire and machine guns.

Sorry, didn't like using that analogy given the events of 100 years ago, but we aren't celebrating the stupidity or ridiculous tactics of the time.

I had no problems getting the paper work (from the Fire Arms Officer) either, in fact he said it was a stupid decision to prohibit them...............just Customs. I think the Customs chappie was one of those self opinionated officious pricks as I did not challenge him in any way, just produced the permit and asked for the goodies.

They (Customs) are not the approving authority for prohibited weapons import, the NZ Police are. NZ Customs have no authority to reject the consent of any importation approved by the NZ Police under the Customs Import Prohibition Order 2011.
