Thread: Hearing protection for the range

Realised today how obnoxiously loud a 16" AR is without a suppressor as my earplugs were not working as well as they have in the past, talking about those fancy clear sealing ones from H&F.

Whats a decent set of earmuffs for range and walkies use that wont make me already any more broke than i already am?

I got some of these, they have pretty good noise reduction and the electronics mean you can still hear conversation unless in the middle of a barrage of shots.

Dam sure I payed more like 400ish tho so shop around if you go for these.

I just use a pair of Howard Leight's, paid nothing for them cos @Beaker is a good bugger and gave them to me. Theyre good for the shooting I do and electronic so can still have a conversation with out screaming at each other

If you value your hearing then you will steer clear of the howard leights.

I use the xp's like vietnamcam, fucking expensive but theyre huge and they work for that reason.

I've got a cheapo pair of Caldwell electronic ones and they have done fine by me
The battery cover is a bit flimsy but otherwise they are ok for around $70 ish?

Anything that is rated Class 5.
Personally, I like Peltors.
Expect to pay about $60 for the passive twin cup ones with no electrics in them.

Don't be affraid of wearing both muffs and plugs at the same time. You can't get your hearing back! I agree with @Moutere class 5 minimum.

I have a pair of Peltor "Pro Tac 3's",very good all round muffs.They are electronic and do a great job of blocking out the gunshots if you are having a conversation.

I use grade 5 plugs and grade 5 muffs at the same time. My 15 inch ar15 is extremely loud without the suppressor on it.

grade 5 or better, a few of the options people have mentioned in this thread are only grade 3, eletronic muffs are nice at the range but most or only grade3 or 4- you can get grade 5 ones but they cost real $. Personly would rather cheep dumb grade 5 muffs than a set of grade 3 smart muffs

Hearing aids are a pain.

bought some peltor tep -100 tactical work good waterproof /www.3mnz.co.nz/3M/en_NZ/company-nz/all-3m-products/~/3M-PELTOR-TEP-100-Tactical-Earplug/?N=5002385+3292682142&rt=rud got them on amazon though with peltor skull screw replacement tips ment to give 35 dec protection 16 hour running put them back in the case and they recharge on two aaa batteries

My first pair have just gone kaput. That is one ear. So have retired them.
Second pair just survived a sim day on clays. I fired well over 400 rounds.. the defenders worked a treat.........my shoulder is so feeinn brushed today! But on the bright side I can hear myself squeal blue murder when I move

Edit there where 17 guns so well over 6800 rounds in one day.

Class 5 as others have said or you won't get enough protection.
Last year I bought a pair of Peltor Sport-tac electronic ones (think that was the model) for about $250-300. There was a guy recommending them for hunting but I haven't tried them for that yet. I had a play with them around the house and it was weird being able to hear the cat's footsteps as she walked across the lawn!
I have used them for a couple of range days, it's good being able to hear instructions clearly but have gunshots muffled. I seem to recall the muffs are only grade 3, but they seem to block more noise than my cheapo grade 5s - probably due to better fit and quality, so grade rating isn't necessarily the be-all and end-all.
