My Dads single shot 308 has always had problems with opening when firing.
His "gunsmith" mate has had it for a year or so to fix that and shorten/suppress it and mount a scope.
So I thought id have a play at making some subs for it
Shot one opened
Shot two opened
Shot three failed to fire(very light firing pin strike) closed recocked and fired
Shot 4 fired stayed closed and the open button is flopping round doing nothing.
How do I open it and then sort out its issues. Out with the pin punches?
Ok got it open now how do I fix it so it wont open when it shouldnt and will open when it should?
LOL back where I started........... not thinking I closed it to put it in the safe while the kids watched a movie and I farted around in the shed.

Its not mine, Not too impressed with the smith work, looking down suppressor you can plainly see the individual baffles are out of alignment with each other by at LEAST 1mm ,that would explain the 10.5 mm hole down it lol

Those Rossi's are farken awful. My first centerfire was a Rossi Wizard. It wouldn't open after shooting either, cases got stuck, the finish was shit. Just give it back to the guy at tell him to bin it.

when i was hunting for a rifle to buy a while ago i looked at those single shot rossis and did not find a single good comment about them. most reports were of what is being described.

My Baikal does the same thing
Had 3 clicks when lined up on a Cham with 3 different round
You have to be FIRM when shutting it
When it fails, you can see the opening lever isnt quite in the right spot - ie all the way out
Found the little tab on the opening lever is broken off.
Will build it up with some hard ss
That's what happened to my rossi also. That tab is pretty small, easy to see how they break. I had Dean Maisey fix it, I think he made a new part.
He might be able to give you some info on it

I lightly prepped it and built it up using 507t toolsteel making sure to penetrate all the way threw into the hole to provide as large as possible dilution area for the dissimilar metals.
Now iv got to clean it up and shape it.

The locking peice it engages only has a very small notch hence the pissy little tab.

I'm thinking I will open out this notch half a mm or so to enable the tab to be a bit beefier. At first glance i cant see a problem with this but will have to look further obviously.
Then onto why it broke it in the first place, in theory there should be no load on that tab during firing unless the angles on the locking piece and barrel are creating thrust. The locking piece has obviously been on a stone and im picking is the cause:cave:
Its still nice and tight when closed so hopefully I can remedy this without having to build it up and start from scratch.
My firing pin was too short to start with - send it back and they were going to replace - but I had hacked 6" off the barrel and attacked the wood :)Quote:

You can easy it shut and pull the open lever back down and its good - but if its not completely down then no go
Its only fired a handful of rounds and still pretty tight

I also opened the notch in the locking piece to allow a beefier tab(half a mm)
When getting close I dropped pins in on the outside of action to check operation and went to wet and dry round a small file.

Once I actually thought about how it had to go together ( I just knocked it apart) what Muzza had said about pins became obvious and I cut the shank off a new 5mm drill bit as a "slave pin".......... Necessary to assemble parts under spring tension before putting into action.

The whole action went together a piece of piss, trigger and associated springs,levers etc took a couple of goes till i worked out to tape the trigger in the fired position. then all good:)
Fiddled with a bit making sure it all worked closed it firmly on a sub and fired it into a block of wood:)
Further testing with sub and full power ammo will have to wait. ( full power ammo in shop after hours probably not a good idea! )
ok just fired off a few subs and they were fine. fired some factory 150gr and they all opened the action.
looks like it going to be out with the bearing blue and stone to get more engagement and less angle on the locking peice:roll:
Update, fired 50 rounds threw it this evening with zero dead mans click and zero opening on fireing:) YAY!
I had gone down the bearing blue and stone route on the locking piece intill the locking piece fully engaged leaving the triger group out each time I trial fitted so I could see whats going on. sorry no pics bloody phone:pissed off: I know I took them but they arnt there.
Not having access to a range this evening I went bush to test.
Lying in the dirt with a bipod and my hand as a rear bag,Rapid fire in rapidly failing light with a shit fixed 3x scope I resighted after remounting the rail that had come loose fitted by NOT ME
Factory fed 150 went 1.5-2" at a hundy yards........good enough for its intended use
90gr xtp subsonic went around a inch @ 50y
130 barnesTTSX with no load development whatsoever (just dropped a grain from my Sakos load) and a plucked out of thin air seating depth produced 6x 3 shot groups all under a inch at 100y averageing around .8
The shooting crony averaged 3020fps for the barnes 2650 for the fed and 1020 for the subs out of the 18" barrel
The barnes is a bit hot really but it shoots so im loading up some more and giving it back to the old man.
This is 3 of the barnes groups(scope wasnt doing what it was told) shot in shit light with a fixed 3x off the ground with no bags rapid fire.

Hi, old thread I know, but after being away from the game for awhile, I'm looking at some new reloads for my .308win Handi rifle, specifically some subsonic (and supersonic) XTP 90g and 130g Barnes TTSX - any chance you recall what powders and weights you were loading?
