You can now but when the whispers first came out, the technical info of barrel twist, dimensions, loads, and suppressor design was a well kept secret, the chamber reamer was protected under a patent meaning you had to get a rifle built to spec buy a official whisper retailer. There were many copy cats at the time the article was written and I think that comment was having a dig at the fact they were using slower twist barrels, the 1-8" was not a common twist in .308 at the time and JD had Shilen making custom runs for him with the correct twist to stabilize a 240gr at subsonic speeds. This meant the copy cats were also using lighter projectiles which as you can see by comments above are just not as effective as the 240gr SMK and 250gr WC
Now there is the .300BLK and the tooling, barrels and info is out there to replicate JDs .300 whisper perfectly.. yet people have forgotten its roots and its original design spec which in my opinion is important if you are hunting larger game with subsonic loads. If you're not using the fancy new wallet killing expanding copper subsonic bullets I highly recommend you decrease the chances of a tiny hole pass through and only shoot lager game with the longer 240gr SMKs.
