Is it about the same as a .22lr or a bit louder?
Depends if it's from a rifle or pistol, and subsonic or supersonic.
Definitely much louder than .22lr though.
9mm's can be Bloody loud Toby
Cheers
Pete
A shotgun. Bugger was hoping to play with it around home.
Would the pistols be louder due to a short barrel?
Any centre fire with a short barrel is farken loud, Ive only ever fired my 12" barrelled 44 mag once without its can on and no ear protection, A sure as fuck don't want to do it again in a hurry.
Shotgun with a insert that goes in the barrel to take 9mm. might get a .357 one at some stage too. should be good for a laugh.
Like this Toby??
Pocket Sportsman Cartridge Adapter Single Kit
Yup. They are on trademe for about 40 bucks.
I saw them earlier on and said to my brother if I see a single shot shotty for cheap I'll get me this. Turns out a cheap single shot was on the forum today :)
If you fire a 9mm at home (unless you live really rural) you might find yourself surrounded!!! 9mm is quite loud, well from a pistol anyway
If it's loud enough to leave your ears ringing when shooting without hearing protection, consider it loud ;) If you look on YouTube you'll find tons of 9mm shooting, yup it makes a sharp noise.
9mm in a rifle is louder than a .22 but what did you expect.
Google said average speed is 1100-1300 so I expected it to be around the same noise level as a .22lr. Glad I asked cause this isn't the case
Usual unsuppressed peak sound pressure levels, measured 1m left of the muzzle;
9x19 mm pistols, c. 160-163 dB
9x19 mm SMG/carbines, c. 155-158 dB
.22 LR pistols, c. 155-158 dB
.22 LR rifles, c. 139-143 dB

Ase Utra sound suppressors
9mm is a fun little round to reload. I found a cast .358 150gn LRN sized down to .356, with a subsonic load of about 4.2gns of Unique was uber accurate and still grunty enough to cycle the action. Factory stuff is way louder.
Reloading may be worth while. If I can get subs working it'll be hella fun smoking sparrows out the window
Careful with the firing zone , you never know who is peeking in your window:o.
I've made some shot shells with .357 "they're fun till you put your eye out" hehe lucky I was wearing eye protection as they bounce back off wood rather than embed.
FYI @Toby lives in Wairoa. What happens there is a bit different to the rest of the world :P
Toby, how long is the insert and is it rifled?
Just a thought, even if the insert is rifled there is still gonna be some play in the chamber so you may battle to get a zero unless you secure the insert to the chamber somehow.
I think he throws a couple out in one insert but I'll test the accuracy my self to see what I can get with a bead, not expecting much.
Leaning towards welding a bit of steel to the barrel that's drilled and tapped to take a mount. Not sure yet I change my mind so much
If your gonna scope it it would be worth fixing the insert in the barrel if its not a snug fit.
Extraction could be tricky then tho.
I was thinking maybe getting a rifled one and welding it to the extractor and grinding it flat but not to sure if I want to weld it in cause then that stops me using other ones
Gun turned up today thanks @Malhunting
Not enough meat to drill and tap but will probably pretty safe to weld something to it. I places a scope roughly where I thought it be and noticed to cock it will be an issue but can always weld a little bar out to the side
Glad it turned up ok mate, i want to see finished pics.
a bit of thread tape would make it fit snug if need be,
