how meny of you shoot black powder

I have a 36cal a 38cal and a 50cal
Also have a Remington rolling block which is distend to be a 45-70

How many of you smoke pole shooters are there

If there’s enough interest I would like to ask the forum to start a black powder section

I started with a few muzzle loaders in the 70s and shot some BP revolver, then gave it all way. August last yr I purchased a 58 cal Enfield, since sold as at the same time I bought a trap door Springfield replica in 45/70 and got hooked on cartridge guns, now added the snider, yet to fire and a martini 577/450 for a sore shoulder and a nose bleed and last a really neat husqvarna 45/70 bolt action. I am amazed at the accuracy and shoot with a very relaxed buch of guys here in Tauranga, now try to collect different actions.also shoot BP 12guage and mucking with a load for my homemade double gun.

Yep got brass and lead projectiles

I'm off to work this week but get in touch in 6 wks time and we'll sort something
I'm keen to get into BP shooting myself

the thing ive lern't with black powder is dont run before you walk

my advice to you is dont touch a fire lock ( flint or match) till you have done a fair bit of shooting with a simple cap lock 1st

black powder guns are temperamental to put it lightly each gun is very different and they all like you to do different things to get them to shoot well or go bang at all for that matter

1st start you will have misfires lots of misfires trying 1st up with a flintier and you'd be lucky to get it to fire at all

My suggestion for a 1st rifle is an under hammer due to its lack of a bolster the spark from the cap goes directly into the main charge which reduces the temperamental natures of the rifle

My suggestion in calibre is 45 or 50 as you can buy all the stuff you need at a good gun shop...
The other reason is an under hammer is only $250-$400 2nd hand

Start there imo

And yes black powder is a-cat unless it’s a pistol then its b-cat
It’s very fun and once you get used to it you’ll love it. It can be a bit frustrating when 1st starting but it won’t take long to get the hang of it

i enjoy a good blast on a semi from time to time there both fun the thing i like about black is the fact that you may only fire a few rounds compared to a moden centerfire but the few rounds you did fire you have to go trough your reload squince perfictly otherwise you fuck your group i like the gritty nitty of it
also theres not much shooting you can do for under 20c a round these days

I found that using bp rifles greatly improves your offhand shooting skills, especially when you go back to cf and rimfire :)

yep becouse the lock time is quite a bit slower with black powder it teachs you to follow through with your shots

from memory you sold me your 36 underhammer didn't you

this was shot the other day useing my 38 and a 36 cal ball (i took the worng balls to the range) shoots better with the right size balls and even better with slugs
75m both are 5 shot groups with one or 2 same holers

Any pointers from the BP users as to where I should be looking would be appreciated.

These guys might be a good place to start, might even be able to dig you up a Brown Bess (wouldn't say no to a Baker rifle myself)

Yes, the price of "newbies" is a bit of a shudder. If by ABC you mean (and I suspect you do) Auckland Black powder Club, my thanks for the guide and I have located their website and details.

I don't shoot Black Powder out of a Pistol or Rifle.

However I do burn a kg or so of Black Powder every year out of this. :)
