I'm told it would only be a barrel change to convert a 243 to 7mm08. Is this so, and if so how much would that cost?

+1 cost me 1K to my 264 win mag last year through Cleland gunsmith in hamilton. Arthur did an awesome job. Would highly reccomend him.
With Trueflite Ultramatch barrel $950-1000 including freight.
Vulcan barrel less.
Pre-owned factory barrel much less again, if you can find one that will just need screwing in & head spacing.
I've got a new rem700 708 bbl if you want to buy
Iv also got a 708 new factory barrel.
blued.
Stainless
I've got a 7mm Rem Mag, stainless,think big:O_O::D
might have to pull the bolt out after each shot to eject and reload :D
Lothar Walther profiled blanks are $US250 from Brownells. Gun Works told me they would chamber and fit a barrel for $120 I think it was.
Wow thats cheap. Normally anywhere between 250-350 for chambering barrel fit plus crown if its a blank youll need to pay for profile aswell.

These are precontoured but most of them are varmint profile I think. Would want them turned down. RIFLE BARRELS | Brownells
Barrels are way cheaper in the US, much like everything else
For what reasons do you want to change a 6mm to 7mm ? They both run the same shell,
only thing you will achieve is less accuracy and more recoil.
Seems odd to me.
keeping the 243.
bought a 270 as well
So what was the reason for wanting 7 08'
I'm a little confused hear, the world has considered 6mm to be a more then adequate round for medium game for years.
The result he is wanting is to kill a deer or a thar,
Both pills will dispatch the animal.
How is hitting it harder going to kill it any faster. Dead is Dead.
I thought Thar can be bastards to kill? Idk never hunted them yet.
I certainly wouldn't want to stand infront of one,
I've said this before ill say it again.
A deer don't care about what bc or how fast or slow a bullet it's been hit with.
accuracy freeks play with 6 ,6.5 then move to the 30s and up.
I've seldome seen a superbly accurate 7mm.
I have a 284 that dissagrees with you on that. Funny you say that cause i have seen very few 7mms that wont shoot. Im not knocking 243s i love them but run the numbers dude there not flash. As for standing infront of it? I wouldnt want to stand in front of a 22 but id hardly take one deer hunting.

Time to go, all these computer figures from keyboard jockeys is doing my head in.

Nuff said.
shot plenty of thar with my 243. kills fine.
saw plenty die to the 270 too, 7rem mag killed well too.
now iv got a 243 and a 280 for the same reasons you have. hunting rifle for up to redskin and redskin and above.
my 708 barrel would make your 270 a 280 very easily......
meh it can sit there for a nother 2 years for all i care
who would like to buy a winny 243 barrel then? as ive swapped for a 260:thumbsup:
I think my 243 with 20inch barrel and suppressor is undergunned for a big canty red in the 300m range. Some keyboard jockey on here told me that I needed a 7mm08 instead of a 270. But a SPSS 700 fell in my lap for less than $900 and my other 2 hunting buddies use 270.
I'm keeping the 243 for everything below big red, and the 270 for larger or longer requirements on big animals.
Hunter and outdoor writer Chuck Hawks notes: "When using the .243 to hunt medium-size big game animals, bullet selection is paramount. Rapid (but controlled) expansion is very important, as the small diameter 6mm bullet has little shocking power if it does not expand and expend its energy inside of the animal.
That kind of sums it up for me. Most americans consider it to be a varmint rifle and the factory ammo reflects this use. With the right ammo its a good calibre, just like the .223 and .222 are.
Kj
Haha love it kimjon, I use a 223 for deer 90% of the time,
And cullers used the 222 a bit.
Good thing they didn't know who chuck hawks was.
Dose that men the 223 is better then 243 now.
Tussock it was done on an iPad, I don't have a keyboard.
Sorry
Thats the truth right there Tussock.
My old boss was a culler and too date probably has been responsible for the demise for over 100,000 deer.
When culling he used a .270 among others. Still does.
I hate the friggin things along with
poo 4 3's. But ya can't argue with results.
It's all personal preference.

Theres something to be said about the experience gained when your shooting big numbers of animals.
