    Howa actions

Very soon (Fingers crossed) I will be able to afford to buy a howa 1500 in 7mm08 eventually I want to save and have the chamber recut to .284 I know the Howa 7mm08 action is a short action but have heard that the action is slightly longer than a standard short action like on the marlins etc. Can anyone verify this for me as I like short actions but want the 280 performance from a short action without having to go down the WSM route heaviest i pill would be shooting is 150gr.

Dont worry bout it. 284 is designed on short action anyway 150s should fit easily inside the mag well im looking down the same route eventually.

Hows the current .284 going for you Chris? from what I have seen on your threads looks like you have been having some success with it. I see a lot of threads downing the use of short actions for the .284 with not being able to seat the high BC 160gr + projectiles further out but at the end of the day if you have a 130 or 150gr going at .280 speeds then it would definitely lay a good wallop on deer and pigs also I have seen talk of a .284 ackley improved but I think that would be encroaching on long action material defeating the purpose of having a slightly lighter rifle than what you get in a long action.

No offense or anything intended but end of the day the difference between the 20 most popular calibers out to say 400 yds is as good as you (or i) can shoot
1.367883moa better is what??? Miss or meat?

Have another beer bro. Yea ross the 284s going well but it is a long action and its got a 26inch barrel. Im looking at doing a short barrel light version in the future probably on a tikka and hopefully my current load will shoot acceptably in both rifles and save some mucking round. Failing that ill be goin for the 120 barnes or gmx

Fully aware of that but I just want something that is equivalent to a .270 or .280 but in a short action without going down the magnum route and to me the .284 is something I would like to look at but without spending the big dollars to get a secondhand custom built rifle.

Given you mentioned 'lighter' earlier the Howa possibly isn't the way to go - the actions are close to the top of the fat pile.
T3 seems to tick all the boxes?

Mag box length of mine is about 2.865". Well that's what I load to anyway and don't have any issues feeding rounds from the magazine.

Actually I have handled the new howas and they are only just a little bit heavier than a tikka T3 and are way lighter than a Weatherby Vangard and the howa is a better fit for me than a tikka T3 anyway so why buy a rifle that is not going to be very comfortable for me to shoot.

Totally disagree with everything you said
The T3 is a shitload lighter, and the Vanguard is the same weight
Have a look at a Vanguard and a Howa side by side and you 'might' see something interesting.
They are dumping the Vanguards out at $599 at the mo

    From my info
    Hogue Howa 7.5-7.75 lbs
The T3 is a full lb + lighter than the Howa
    Vanguard 7.5-7.75
    Vanguard 2 7.25-7.5
    Rem 700 7.25-7.5

So a standard 7mm08 then, because it's equivalent in The Real World

You will need to reload as Id guess a 284 will be both expensive to feed factory ammo as well as being a fairly obscure round.
I know of a few 284s that have not lived up to their potential in a practical length. I do know of a 7mm-08 though that has been sending 162 Amax's at mid 2700 speeds with a 26" tube (accuracy was crap though). I think if you really want 280 performance you need a 280. Whats a few extra mm's of action length worth really?

You can always down load the 280 or WSM

My 284 will equal any 280 and can be loaded hot to go toe to toe with the rem mag. Gimp is right the reality is a 7mm08 will do it without the hassle and in a short ass barrel too.

Really? How fast can you launch a 162 out of your 284?
