Thread: I bought a 7mm Rem Mag

Many moons ago when I was starting out hunting I owned a series of sporterised service rifles. Having fired hundreds of rounds of .270 as a kid on a friends farm I had a terrible flinch, which the lightened, short barreled 30 cals only enhanced. With the help of some gentleman from NZs hunting forum scene, I got some shooting lessons and a chance to try some real hunting rifles. I lusted after a guys stainless/laminate M77 25-06 and I found 7mm Magnum was not so bad to shoot, and I wanted to hunt Tahr more than anything so I spent all day gazing at Stainless/Laminate Ruger M77s in 7mm Rem Mag.

This morning I bought one for $600 of Trademe.. I felt the need to post here because my wife could care less about my guns. https://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Lis...?id=1949995725

What the hell? What happened to second hand rifle prices? Did I steal this or is it just what they go for these days?

considering the risk a secondhand buyer takes i consider most guns way over priced on TM . . . then you have the old classic rifles, 30-40 years old and fck knows what they shoot like for crazy money

Score alright. I tried to post to the 270 thread last night but it got lost . . .but it's worthwhile to mention it here. In the early eighties I spent quite a bit of time up at the Leith Valley range as RO.

Many times I'd encounter a bloke with a (often 270) or other fairly high power rifle that he couldn't shoot, and usually blaming the rifle. If you watched these guys you could see they had a flinch/were gunshy. I'd offer to take thie rifle and shoot agroup and get it sighted in at 100 . . . . I got a lot of free shooting.

As @csmiffy pointed out in the 270 thread, the laws of physics do not allow a 270 to kick more than any other cartridge with 60 gns powder and a 130 or 150 gn projectile (all other things being equal, particularly stock design). What was getting these boys was the sharp muzzle blast a 270 often produces. Back in the day when H4381 and the like were the goto powders for 270 etc you'd often see a hell of a muzzle flash as well, which I now feel probably equates to a high muzzle pressure.

The answer back then I found (and its the same today) was use the best possible earmuff's for range shooting and make sure they fit properly. I've had flinch issues at various times but always get back on track by ensuring I have the best ear protection when practicing.

Currently I shoot an unsuppressed 7x64 quite a bit, its in the 7mm Rem mag class powerwise, but the recoil is quite manageable on the range with good position (I wouldn't like to fire long strings prone for example) and hearing protection.

Saw that last night and thought what a bargain.

Cheers guys. I'm going to pick it up tomorrow. Always wanted a 7mm Rem Mag. I have a had an earlier Ruger before and while it had a shot out barrel when I owned it, I re-barreled it to .280 and gave it to my brother for his birthday. He will not part with it as it is a very accurate rifle now.

Will be handy to have a spare rifle.

As with most of the common calibers you can't go wrong with a 7 mm Mag, they are very efficient for all aspects of hunting, also a wide range of projectiles for all your shooting needs.
