You speak of your Grandad in the present tense which leads me to believe that you are in the younger ages group. I suggest that you make minimal changes to the rifle other than what you have already done. Suppress it if you like but leave the barrel as it is. If you chop it I can just about guarantee that one day you will think "Why the hell did I do that"? and it will bug you for the rest of your life. Please believe me on this from someone in your granddads cohort. I would dearly like to have a rifle either of my granddads had owned but the only one either of them had was a Lee Enfield in 1916 and 17 and the army took it back.
