I want to build a pig

I'm pretty happy with the two main rifles I have now, one a lightweight alpine sort of rifle, and the other a more dedicated long range hunting rifle. So, in the interest of covering all my bases, and because I hate not having something "on the go" I reckon I need to build a compact lightweight bushpig type rifle. I was hoping I could find a M70 extreme weather in 308 and build on that but the term hens teeth comes to mind. After Buzzman put that 284 barrel up for sale (I missed the boat) it got me thinking about building on the 284 calibre and just using a T3 as a donor for ease of finding parts and to keep costs under control, I have a brand new T3 in 270 sitting here so a simple barrel swap would give me the benefit of already having a long action mag and bolt stop right? (Forgive me 270 gods..) What sort of performance are people getting from short barrelled (16" ish) rifles? Ideally I would like to get out to 500 on deer size game without any worries if the opportunity presented itself? Will a short 308 get me the same results? Would be cheaper to build.

I'll only shoot my .308 to 400m on deer, mainly due to the slow 1:12 twist and 130gr projectiles I use. Could probably use 150gr but it's so nice to shoot with the lighter pills

What length barrel?

284 a realy cool Cal bro my mate that brought one of my 284 smokes stuff out to 600 with ease.with 09 powder and 160grn u get around 2750 on 18"

I have an idea but you will have to wait and see!!

Have you built one Smiddy? I could see it having to be fed with R17 or some other difficult to obtain powder to get results and make use of the case capacity?

Go with a 16" 308 and a decent suppressor as below.

You will see part way through this thread that I have got the 90 grain XTPs shooting 1moa and very quiet

Yip 16"308, 165 Nosler BTs doing 2650, still got the goods to 550 (only killed to 300 so far). Once the Stug arrives next year it'll be a demon

A 16 inch 7mm saum in a Remington model 7 /Tikka T3 pushes 150g Ballistic Tips at 3000fps with Remington brass, 2950ish with other brands.
(Usual disclaimer :work up to these velocities if your rifle/brass allows)

I have a Model 7 in 7mm08 with gworks suppressor just about kissing Stug stock, Z6i 2-12... it is really light and handy. I am a model 7 fanboy though.

Ryan I have a 17" 284 T3 on long action. Was the 17" 7mm08 I got of buzzman.

It was my most used rifle at the Toby shoot, was going good. 162 amax at just 2600 with 2209. Very accurate there.

Stumpy at 14 inches ... Its magic ...

Shoots fast 125 s really good.

Had in a chassis for a while till I modded a stock for it.

At 600 yards the 162 at just 2600 fps still holds 1,260 odd ft lbs.

A bit of R17 would liven it up a fair bit I'd say.

Wow i shoot 30-40 kangaroos a night 5 nights a week with a 300aac 200-400 mtr shots 110 grain has no issues ,

Just personal. Has a 14.5" barrel weighs 6 pound 1.5 ounces scoped and suppressed and is only ever shot offhand or across a daybag. Have shot a few reds between 350-400m with it, and decided 400 was enough. What is your roo shooting set up?

I've got a Sako 270 that is collecting dust and want to rebarrel to a 16" .284. I like short barrelled rifles now after using my 12" 300 blackout. It's smoked over 57 deer now, head shot a deer 251m with Subs and 300m max distance on deer so far with 125gr BT supers.

I would be happy with any 16" or less bush pig from 308, 7mm-08, 284.

Does my theory of just rebarelling the T3 270 stack up? Same bolt face etc as 308, 284 etc and have the added bonus of the long magazine and bolt stop?

Wouldn't mind something a bit "nicer" (they told me this would happen when I got my first Sako..) but I suppose the whole idea of a pig is exactly that it's just a thrasher, have only put a crappy old weaver V9 on the T3 and fired a few shots through it to see how it went, two shots touching and the other not far off at 100yds, then I told it "you disgust me" and put it back in the safe.

The T3 reamed to 284win with 17" barrel. Running 162 amax I'd happy shoot deer to 600 in right conditions.

And the other is a Mod 7 7mm08 chopped to 15". Just running a 120 NBT at 2900 which I'm happy with to 400. Might try some 140s or 150s in it.

Note. The can on the t3 only has 2 baffles on it in pic, normally run the standard 4. But they are currently on another can which is buried in my pack ready for fly-in tomorrow.

Depending on what you do for a barrel, it's possibly the more expensive way of doing it.

You want to rebarrel clearly but for the cost of a thread why not give the 270 a burn in a 16" barrel?
Already got all the reloading gear etc

Good idea, use 140g projectiles, magnum primers and 2208 powder for a quick shove in that short tube, the velocity and long range retained energy will surprise you.

HaHa. My T3 bush pig wears a crappy old V9 too. Hasn't let me down yet.

That's ok if you are well disciplined, but often when a longer shot turns up -your tempted to give it a go with the Barnes and you end up with a very long ever diminishing blood trail with no animal at the end of it.
