    I Want a new bipod

    Hi Guys ,

I have wanted a new Low Center of Gravity Bipod for my AI AX rifle for quite some time , I tried to get a NZ maker interested , But , No interest .

So I will try again , IF NO , then I will get a Local CNC Engineering shop to make it to my specs .

So basically it will mount to AI AX rifles , all tube guns , all quad rails etc , with just a change of adapter plates/bush , it will be a ring mount bipod , like a OLD Russian DP LMG from WWII , but a bit nicer .

Anyway heres a pic of a quick mock up of what it will sort of look like .

In terms of sales , I would think it would be way more than brakes or suppressors , as their is bugger all out their like it , and if you can keep prices out of the clouds , it should be a very good seller , and virtually , no import/export restrictions , call it a camera " bipod " , Opps

I think you will struggle to keep the costs "out of the clouds" and still make it to a quality you will like. A friend of mine has just gone down this track of putting together their own bipod because there weren't many options he liked for his rifle. It was more expensive than he anticipated for the machining and he will likely have to have another one made now he has tried out the prototype and would like to make a couple of modifications. His line of thinking was pretty close to yours as well - low centre of gravity, wide feet, and had to fit forward of a rail on the fore-end.

Have you looked at the elite irons bipod (EliteIron High Quality Suppressors)? Sounds a bit like what you are after.

I think my next bipod will be an RPS bipod and I will modify the spigot mount to suit my rifles.

Yeap , Its all relative , I know what you mean , and expect this one to cost a fair bit , BUT as Sako bipods & the Elite Iron are very dear , $800 USD plus , and thats maybe 1200 with out GST & shipping ?

The main 2 parts will be basically be like thick pipe with machine cuts .

Yeap , the a ELR shooter , called " Triggerfifty " , designed a similar low C of G , tube type bipod about 10 yrs ago & had a few made ( well before Elite Iron copied IT ) , this was maybe the 1st modern version of the OLD Russian WWII DP LMG bipod .
I might use the legs OFF the Sako TRG bipod I have to save time in getting mine built up .

What am I missing? What's the advantage over other types of bipod, other than its built like a brick shithouse from solid steel and weighs over 2lb?

You are missing EVERY thing , unless you have used a TRG-22/42 series wide foot bipod , thats by your statement , most people , have not , as 1 ) They donot own a Sako TRG series rifle ( as its made ONLY for that rifles chassis profile ) , & 2 ) Even IF you have a Sako TRG , most donot have the Sako Factory bipod , as they have always been valued in GOLD dust by weight , and they are heavy compared to a little Harris .

In simple terms , in stead of the rifle teating on the top , its as IF the rifle is sling under , very stable and lower C Of G , it hangs virtually suspended , very stable and different feel to the bipod , and me describing IT , is no ware close to the feel of it , it needs to be FELT by actual use , NOT by just looking at IT .

And Too me , its the natural extension of the quad rail/tube type forends , and makes best use of this type of fore end .

So for the likes of virtually all the AR15s , all the new chassis stocks , and all the newer PSR type sniper rifles , so its actually a lot of different rifles .

So basically it comes down to a wider stance that makes it more stable?

I find the tiny pink teddy bear in the background a tad creepy, especially with such beautiful hands hogging the limelight.

The range of what we think and do is limited by what we fail to notice. And because we fail to notice that we fail to notice, there is little we can do to change; until we notice how failing to notice shapes our thoughts and deeds

Yeah, pretty close really. The wider stance helps with the stability (look at F Class bipods) and fundamentally having a lower centre of gravity (i.e. barrel is under the leg intersection point) will also make it more stable.

I found the TRG bipod to be better for me than the harris I am using. I found it marginally more stable, easier to load and easier to maintain my natural point of aim and not skew the rifle. Will it make me a measurably better or more accurate shooter? Hard to say, I think it will by a very small margin - with the competition shooting I do this is enough for me. And if nothing else the quick attach method will be less hassle in the competition. Am I worried that it weights a little more? No, my long range competition rifle is already 13lb and with the bipod quick attach method the bipod won't live on the gun like my current harris one does.

The only drawback I can see is that I will need to modify two of my beloved Sakos to fit the spigot mounts.

Its not just the wider stance , its mostly the actual Low center of Gravity that makes the bipod feel & preform differently than the normal bipods .
and as I said , to me the tube type forends used a lot more now , really suit this type of bipod, also due to the Low C of G , its much less likely that when the rifle is on the bipod to un-balance and fall over on un-even ground etc .
And as good as the old Sako wide foot bipod is , this type should be slightly better , as its a little lower .
