    Ideal supressor thread?...

Just wondering if there is an ideal thread for a supressor or most common. Im looking into doing a cut and thread to my 308. Currently, I think its M15x1 and i hardly see any supressors for sale with that thread.

14 x 1 is pretty common these days so you should have no problem with availability BUT it also depends on the diameter of the barrel, you need a good shoulder to screw the can up to.

while all my guns and suppressors are 14x1 I would not say that that is "the ideal" thread.

ideally you want the thread to be as large as possible (for mechanical strength reasons, while still giving a shoulder for the suppressor to index against.

On the other hand having everything the same, and choosing a commonly used thread has its advantages. Like everything its a compromise.

Ideal and most common is 2 very different sizes.

Ideal: As big in diameter as possible, no less then 1mm smaller than the barrel diameter at the crown.

    Most common:
    Ultra light barrels: 1/2" x 20 or 28tpi
    Hunter profile barrels: M14x1
    Varmint barrels: 5/8" x 24tpi or M18x1.

    Hope this helps.

I normally work on ideal size.

If you're looking to install muzzle devices from the US primarily or for competition purposes, then 5/8x24.

Eamars is right, its seems the US is having a big drve to standardize on 1/2" x 20 or 28 or 5/8×24tpi.

Sweet, so on my standard 308 barrel 14x1 should be sweet. Especially if i shorten the barrel. Correct?

Maybe I'm missing something. 1/2 is about 16mm isnt it? So the 22 has a wider thread?

    1/2 is 12.7mm
Barrel diameter and customers requirements dictates what threads we use. If the customer doesnt know what they want then we will thread the muzzle to the biggest thread we can, but still leaving enough shoulder for the suppressor to pull up against.

Between son and I we have 2x 243, 1 light & 1 heavy barrl, 223 varment barrel and 358 win lightish barrel all with 14x1
The 14x1 is marginal on the 358 being 9.1mm id giving a wall thickness at the root of the thread of around 1.4mm
